2011 Aussie Millions Event #1 Day 2: Martin Drewe Crowned Champion

Martin Drewe

On Day 2 of the $1,100 Opening Event of the 2011 Aussie Millions, 143 players took their seats in hopes of outlasting the field and taking home the title and the AUD$200,020 first-place prize. In all, 1,000 players (762 were unique) entered the repechage event throughout the three Day 1 flights, but it was Martin Drewe who outlasted them all.

James Akenhead, Annette Obrestad, Maria Ho, Tony Dunst, Richard Ashby and Michael Greco were among the international players who tried their hand at the first event, but none were successful in making it to the second day. Australiasia's Danny Leaoasavaii, Bruno Portaro, Aaron Benton, and reigning Aussie Millions Champion Tyron Krost also took advantage of the repechage format but were unsuccessful in making Day 2 as well.

The first order of business on Day 2 was to burst the money bubble. John Corr had that honor, and while "bubble boy" is not anything anyone looks forward to, his gold pass to the Australian Open isn't a bad consolation prize. After the bubble burst the bust outs were free flowing and after ten hours of play, the final table was reached.

The quick bust outs after the bubble caught up with the final ten players and it took over two hours for the first player to be eliminated from the final table. Isaac Lau was eliminated in tenth place when his kings were no match for the ace-jack of his opponent, Justin Cohen. He picked up AUD$11,520 for his efforts. Next to go, at the hands of Martin Drewe, was Jonathan Palmer.

Full Tilt Poker Red Pro Scott Montgomery was eliminated in eighth place, taking home AUD$22,220. His ace-king was up against the fives of Martin Drewe. The flop came down, deuce-four-king, giving Montgomery a backdoor flush draw and straight draws. The three on the turn reduced Montgomery's outs, but it wasn't meant to be, a three fell on the river and the Full Tilt Red Pro was sent to the rail.

Gabriel Xiourouppa was next to go in seventh, followed by Antoine Bechara in sixth, Vito Dalessandri in fifth, Nik Lackovic in fourth, and Justin Cohen in third. Drewe went into heads up play against Darren Kramer behind in chips, but an aces versus jacks confrontation, went Drewe's way and he was leading the way in chips. It wasn't long after that the chips went in the middle preflop and Drewe was holding queens to the ace-eight of the at-risk Kramer. The queens held and after a long day of play, Martin Drewe walked away with the first gold ring of the 2011 Aussie Millions.

Event 2: $550 PokerPro Shootout

Soon after the second day of Event #1 got under way, Event #2, the $550 PokerPro Shootout, kicked off. The event saw 72 players take their seats at the "virtual" felt, creating a prizepool of AUD$36,000. Jarred Soloman bested the field, when his K?Q? held against the Q?J? of his opponent on a board of 8?K?9?10?3?. This win gives Soloman his second Aussie Millions gold ring and the first-place prize of AUD$10,080.
