GPI POY Presented by PokerNews

Last week, PokerNews and Federated Sports + Gaming (FS+G) announced the launch of the Global Poker Index Player of the Year Award.

A player's score will be comprised of up to 11 tournament results that begin during the calender year. Of those 11 results, up to six will come from events starting Jan. 1 through June 30, while up to five will be from tournaments starting between July 1 and Dec. 31.

Like the Global Poker Index Rankings, all tournaments must have a buy-in of at least $1,500 and contain at least 21 entrants to be eligible in comprising a player's score. How is a player's score determined? Two of the main GPI ranking factors are crucial.

First is the Finishing Percentage Factor. Taken into account is the field size of a tournament and the percentage of the field that a player defeats. The final two players of a tournament with a large number of entrants defeat just about the same percentage of the field, but that gap widens with fewer tournament entrants. The Finishing Percentage Factor reflects this number to better reward the players who outlasts more of the field.

Next is the Buy-in factor. This accounts for the concept of relative difficulty as the baseline (and minimum) for an event to be counted is $1,500. Bigger buy-ins are assumed to be a more difficult field (all events with a $25,000 buy-in or higher are capped at $25,000, so as not to skew the assumed difficulty too much).

Difficulty is scored by using a sublinear multiplier applied to buy-in, which is a logarithmic function, anchored at the $1,500 buy-in events. The bigger the buy-in, the more points a player will earn for a better finish, but diminishing returns are included as to not have the same exact difference between buy-ins (for example, the difference between a $1,500 and $2,000 buy-in is different than $20,000 and $20,500).

From this point, the GPI Player of the Year program multiplies the Finishing Percentage Factor and the Buy-in factor to determine the score for a player in a given event.
