Sam Trickett Wins PartyPoker.com Road to Old Trafford Event, Donates Prize to Charity
With more than $19.7 million in poker cashes at the young age of 27, Sam Trickett ranks second all-time on poker's all-time tournament winnings list. He boasts four seven-figure scores in high-roller tournaments around the globe, including a $10 million payday for his runner-up finish at the $1 million buy-in Big One for One Drop in 2012 at the World Series of Poker.
Normally, it's fair to say Trickett wouldn't even wake up for a 250 buy-in poker tournament. But the event held at Old Trafford in England over the weekend wasn't just any tournament.
On Sunday, Trickett and 168 others lined the field at the home of the Manchester United football club for the inaugural PartyPoker.com Road to Old Trafford poker event. Trickett, a former footballer and die-hard Manchester United fan, joined the likes of U.K. football legends Bryan Robson, Dwight Yorke, Quinton Fortune and Norman Whiteside on the poker felt. And, unsurprisingly, he bested them all, ultimately winning 10,000 and the first Road to Old Trafford title. Trickett reportedly donated most of his prize to charity.
I am really happy to win this event," said Trickett. "I played for fun, but I felt I really had to win at Old Trafford. I made it my mission!
Trickett made a substantial donation to Rio FerdinandsLive the Dream Foundation Charity. Ferdinand was unable to participate in the event because he was playing in a match on Friday, but he signed and personalized Manchester United shirts for each of the final table members.
I am happy to make a contribution to Rios charity. It is a very worthy cause, said Trickett. This has been a great, fun weekend and so much different and more relaxed than any other tournament I have played. I am totally made up for winning at Old Trafford, it has been an amazing experience.
