World Poker Tour Caribbean Day 1a: Rettenmaier Leads; Roy, Failla & Kaverman All Fall
While Jared Jaffee was busy winning the World Poker Tour bestbet Jacksonville Fall Poker Scramble for $252,749 on Tuesday, the $3,200 buy-in WPT Caribbean was just kicking off at the Casino Royale in beautiful St. Maarten. The Day 1a flight attracted 75 of pokers best, and after eight levels of play, two-time WPT champ Marvin Rettenmaier leads the 43 advancing players with a stack of 104,400.
Heres a look at some notable stacks at the End of Day 1a:
Place | Player | Count |
---|---|---|
1 | Marvin Rettenmaier | 104,400 |
2 | Marko Neumann | 104,100 |
3 | Julian Thomas | 100,900 |
4 | Zoltan Purak | 95,000 |
5 | Thomas Laviano | 86,100 |
6 | Ricardo Sousa | 83,150 |
7 | Giacomo Fundaro | 82,300 |
8 | Marc-Entienne Blais | 81,500 |
9 | Ally Pandilica | 80,700 |
10 | Sean Jazayeri | 75,200 |
According to the WPT Live Blog, the event attracted a bunch of former WPT winners, including L.A. Poker Classic champ Sean Jazayeri. In Level 6 (200/400/50), Jake Schwartz, who had previously busted and re-entered, raised from the hijack and received calls from Mike Watson and Jazayeri. All three players checked the Q?10?3? flop as well as the K? turn. When the 5? completed the board on the river, Jazayeri bet 1,000, Watson folded, and Schwartz made the call. Jazayeri tabled the K?6? for a pair of kings, and it was good as Schwartz mucked his hand. Jazayeri went on to finish the day with 75,200 while Schwartz would fall for a second time.
Others who fell on Day 1a were Jonathan Roy, James Joyner, Rob Schiffbauer, Will Failla, Byron Kaverman, Antonin Teisseire, David Peters, and Ebony Kenney.

While many fell, a bevy of notables made it through to Day 2 including Steve Gee (73,000), Mike Linster (47,700), Paul Newey (46,400), Mike Watson (45,000), Micah Raskin (37,500), Anthony Zinno (32,000), Joe Kuether (28,900), John Esposito (25,200), Jordan Cristos (23,200), and Ken Aldridge (13,500).
Raskin actually won the last hand of the night. It happened in Level 8 (300/600/75) on a board reading K?3?2?7?K?. Raskin moved all in for 21,000 and WPT Borgata winner Anthony Zinno tanked before folding the 7?3? for a counterfeited two pair. Raskin opted not to show his hand, and with that Day 1a came to an end.
Day 1b will kick off at 4 p.m. Atlantic Standard Time (3 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT). PokerNews will bring you a recap upon completion of play, and everyday until the tournaments completion. Be sure to check back for those.
