New Bill Could Bring iGaming to South Africa 0001

The South African Parliament will soon be considering a new bill that would legalize online gaming in the country. According to iGaming Business, the new bill, proposed by MP Geordin Hill-Lewis, would repeal the 2008 National Gambling Act, which limits online wagering to sports events.

The new bill would introduce Internet casino gambling to the mix while allowing the national and ten provincial governments to oversee licensing. New applicants would need to apply for a specific license (categories would be created) through the applicable government while existing game license-holders need to re-apply in order offer gaming online.

According to iGaming Business, lawmakers are considering iGaming to protect against unregulated gaming sites and taxation, the latter being determined by each individual province.

If the bill passes, establishing standards are expected to take another six months to establish followed by a licensing period of up to another 18 months.
