Mary Bono Plans to Fight Ban on Internet Gaming
Former Congresswoman Republican Mary Bono will team up with Rep. Mike Oxley, an Ohio Republican, to lead the Coalition for Consumer and Online Protection. The group launched a campaign against a congressional ban of online gaming, saying, "an online gambling ban simply would not work."
The group, known as C4COP, believes that the core problem with a ban is that it would limit states' rights and "stifle innovation and growth."
While in Congress, Bono argued that there needed to be a level playing field with any internet poker bill. She now adds that consumer safety is paramount, and that the government can't necessarily legislate the internet.
Congress can neither legislate the Internet away, nor consumer demand for online products. We need to do all we can to make sure that the Internet is a safe place for businesses, consumers, families and children, Bono said in a statement released by C4COP. I am proud to be a part of the Coalition for Consumer and Online Protection to make sure that people know the risks behind implementing such a ban.
Bono's opponent, Las Vegas Sands Corp. Chairman Sheldon Adelson, is also increasing his group, the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling. This anti-online gaming group consists of 11 different faith and freedom coalition, the American Principles Project, the Network of Politically Active Christians, and the Universal Baptist Church.
