WPT National Canadian Spring Championship Day 2: Mario Lim Leads Final 39 Players
Another day of play at the 2014 partypoker.net World Poker Tour National Canadian Spring Championship wrapped up on Sunday with Day 2 coming to a conclusion. At the start of the day, 323 players remained, but at the end that number had been cut down to 39. The field was well into the money, and leading the way was Mario Lim with 1.758 million in chips.
With $160,999 up top for the winner, all of the returning players no doubt had their goals set high, but first they would have to make it to the money. The top 126 players were set to pay out, and many would fall short. One such player was Stephanie Goertz, and she became the tournament's official bubble when she went out in 127th place.
From there, the in-the-money eliminations began to mount. Some of the notables to hit the rail with a cash were Mike Leah (104th - $1,418), Eric Levesque (89th - $1,985), Amir Babakhani (75th - $2,269), Mike Sexton (74th - $2,269), Daniel Schreiber (45th - $4,256), and Tony Dunst (44th - $4,256).
Babakhani was the defending champion of this event, and with his elimination it cleared the way for someone new to take the title. In 2013, Babakhani won the 2013 WPT Canadian Spring Championship for C$442,248, although last season the event was part of the regular WPT schedule, not the WPT National.
Dunst fell later on, nearly making it to the end of Day 2. According to his Twitter, he jammed all in with the Kx6x suited and couldn't come from behind against an opponent's AxJx.
Coming in behind Lim on the leaderboard to round out the top five will be Eric Afriat (1.7 million), Sylvain Siebert (1.655 million), Alexander Wong (1.402 million), and Tyson Erback (1.19 million). Other notables still remaining are Brent Wheeler (1.022 million), Sam Chartier (925,000), Eric Davis (692,000), Simon Quintal (474,000), and Ami Alibay (450,000).
Day 3 will take place starting at 12 p.m. local time on Monday, and you will be able to find a day's recap right here on PokerNews following its completion. The end goal will be to play down to the official WPT final table of six players.
