Phil Ivey has been in the news a lot lately. Earlier this month, a High Court in London ruled against him in his Crockfords Casino baccarat case, which cost him 7.7 million ($12.4 million), and then earlier this week his site, Ivey Poker, temporarily suspended its play-for-free poker app on Facebook. Now Ivey is back in the spotlight for getting into the marijuana business.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Ivey was among 26 people approved for a city pot permit by Las Vegas City Council members. Others who were approved for a permit were restaurateur Michael Morton and developer James Hammer.

The city council spent nearly 16 hours mulling preliminary land use and licensing entitlements sought by 50 would-be medical marijuana business operators on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The article goes on to reveal that Ivey and the rest of the applicants will now have to seek approval from the state health department. Provided approval is received, the City Council will hold a final suitability hearing. Nevada is expected weigh in on the medical marijuana question next week.
