Ludovic Geilich Gets the Lot in the 2015 GPS Newcastle Main Event
Everyone's favorite hyper-aggressive Scotsman, Ludovic Geilich, may have missed this week's Sunday grind online, but at least he was putting his time away from the virtual felt to good use; he was busy winning the 2015 Genting Poker Series Newcastle Main Event for 27,500.
The final day's play started with Rick Trigg leading the 17 returning players, but nothing went right for the Sheffield-based grinder and he fell in 14th place. Trigg's exit hand was typical of his day, getting his chips in with A?6? versus Nick Ramsay's K?10? on an 8?10?7?8? board, only for the 10? to land on the river to gift Ramsay a full house and Trigg an early exit.
By the time the nine-handed final table was reached, Geilich found himself fifth in chips with a stack the third of the size of leader Darren Grosvenor.
First to bow out was Karl Guiness, who lost a coin flip with Gary Wilson. Guiness committed his chips with the A?9? and Wilson called with the 4?4?. The Q?K?7?3?8? board left Wilson's fours as the best hand and Guiness walked off to collect his 2,000 prize money.
Geilich then hit a rich vein of form that saw him begin bullying the table then busting two players in quick succession.
The first of Geilich's casualties was Michael Richardson who ran his QxQx into the AxAx of Geilich he does get legitimate hands sometimes and then Norman Little's 5x5x couldn't get there against Geilich's 8x8x.
Next to fall was Andrew Leathern. On a 3xJx10x flop Wilson fired a bet and Leathern called. A lowly 2x landed on the turn, Wilson led for 115,000 only to see Leathern jam for 436,000 in total. Wilson eventually called with KxJx and discovered his top pair was good against the Ax3x of Leathern. The river bricked and it was game over for Leathern.
Craig Grainger busted in fourth place after a clash with Wilson didn't go to plan, then Geilich's AxQx held against Wilson's Ax2x to leave only three players in the hunt for the title.
Those three became two when Ramsay bust, leaving Geilich to take a 3.8 million-2.4 million chip lead into heads-up play against Grosvenor.
As you'd expect, Geilich was relentless from the second the heads-up battle commenced and when the final hand took place Geilich had opened a 4.5 million-1.7 million lead for himself. It was a classic coin flip that ended the tournament, as Grosvenor was all in with AxKx and Geilich showing the Q?Q?. By the river, the board read 10x6x8x9xJx, which gave Geilich an unnecessary straight and the win.
