Day 3 took place on Sunday afternoon with a few blurry eyes thanks to many of the players and casino patrons having stayed up to watch the Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao fight, not to mention the player's party at the nearby Tiger Tiger establishment.
Despite a lack of sleep, the action was fast and furious from the word go and the 24 returning players started to drop like flies.
Simon Baker was the first to fall, followed by Gary Langley and a bunch of others. The most notable hand of the eliminations saw Chris "Foggy" Filus get his chips into the middle with AxAx as a huge favourite against Full Tilt sponsored pro Ben Jenkins, who held the 7?7?. A flop reading 7?Q?Q? left Filus drawing to the two remaining aces or running queens, but the turn and river failed to come to his rescue and he headed back to Worcester with a legitimate bad beat tale to tell.
Aces would be cracked again later in the afternoon, and this time it was Elizabeth Costa who got her bullets in against the pocket nines of Peter Agnew.
The final table was reached with Brett Andrews leading and Simpson bringing up the rear. It didn't take too long for the first casualty to be confirmed, as the talented Marc Foggin was the first player out. He was eliminated by Stephen Fung.
Syed Meah, a cash-game regular at Apsers fell in eighth place, with the last-standing partypoker qualifier David Knight busting in seventh place.
With only six players remaining, Jenkins started to show his class and was bossing the table. He came unstuck when his queens lost a huge flip versus the ace-king of Tin Sung Tang, and he got his last 15 big blinds into the middle with the A?5?. Hewas called by Simpson with the Q?10? and busted when the board ran out 8?7?2?5?10?.
Andrews was the next to fall, then Gary Miller hit the rail in fourth. Three-handed play last another three hours and ended with the exit of Tang.
The heads-up match was over rather quickly, thanks in part to Simpson holding a 5-1 chip lead. Fung did double his stack, but it was too little too late because a few hands later, all the chip went into the middle. Fung held the 6?6? and Simpson the superior Q?Q?. A final board reading 2?8?K?2?4? busted Fung and left a delighted Simpson to hold the trophy aloft.
Next up for the WPT National tour is a couple of months break before heading to London for what should be a spectacular event. Satellites will appear in the partypoker lobby in the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for those and see if you can win yourself a WPT National London package.
