2015 WSOP Europe Day 4: John Gale Goes for Third Gold Atop

The 2015 World Series of Poker Europe continued on Sunday with Day 4 of action from the 17-day poker festival. Two events were going today, with Event #2: 550 "Oktoberfest" No-Limit Hold'em reaching its final table and Event #3: 3,250 Eight-Handed Pot-Limit Omaha starting up.

Legendary John Gale Leads "Oktoberfest" Final Table

Just nine players remain in the "Oktoberfest" event, with two-time WSOP gold bracelet winner John Gale in the lead. Gale finished Day 2 with 2.892 million in chips, and that was a fair amount ahead of Brazil's Rodrigo Caprioli in second place with 2.394 million.

The gap between Gale and Caprioli isn't the most eye-opening one heading into the final table, though. Steve O'Dwyer finished Day 2 in third place with 2.231 million in chips, and then no other player bagged up more than 732,000. That's quite the gap between the top three and the bottom six.

Bringing up the rear will be Adrian Apmann with 274,000.

Gale has had himself quite the poker career. He won the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in 2005 for $890,600, and then he scored his first WSOP gold bracelet in 2006 when he won the $2,500 Pot-Limit Hold'em event for $374,849. His second bracelet came earlier this year after a three-year hiatus caused by a brain tumor. Over the summer, Gale won Event #18: $1,000 Turbo No-Limit Hold'em for $298,290.

After a field of 2,144 entries was generated, 173 players returned for Day 2. Some of those to finish in the money included Angelina Rich, Alex Rocha, Shaun Deeb, Scott Clements, Niall Farrell, Asher Conniff, and Ofer Zvi Stern.

The final nine players, all guaranteed 16,935, will return to action on Monday at 4 p.m. local time to play for the gold bracelet and the 157,749 top prize.

Romanello Shows PLO Prowess

Day 1 of Event #3: 3,250 Eight-Handed Pot-Limit Omaha also took place on Sunday, and 161 players were drawn to the felt for some four-card action. Following the first 12 levels of play, the UK's Roberto Romanello led the surviving 31 players with 211,500 in chips.

While many eyes will be focused on Romanello in his quest to obtain the final piece to poker's Triple Crown, another large chunk of people will be focusing in on Max Pescatori and his deep run in another event. Pescatori took eighth in the opening event for 12,120 and some points in the GPI WSOP Player of the Year race.

With 31 remaining, not everyone will reach the money on Day 2. Only the top 20 spots will be paid, meaning 11 players will go home empty handed. Action will resume at 1 p.m. local time on Monday.

Other notables still in contention for the 126,345 top prize and the gold bracelet are Mike Leah, Jesper Hougaard, Dermot Blain, Jonathan Duhamel, Barny Boatman, and Ismael Bojang.
