Gentings Resorts World Birmingham to Become UK's Largest Casino on October 21
The Genting Resorts World Birmingham, which cost 150 million to build, is set to open its doors to the public at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, although cinema-goers, those wanting to visit the brand new Genting International Casino, and anyone wanting to book a hotel room will have a little longer to wait to test out the new facilities.
Genting Resorts Birmingham, situated at the renamed Genting Arena (formerly the NEC), is the fifth such branded leisure facility opened by Genting with the other facilities located in Malaysia, New York City, Singapore and the Philippines. Another Resorts World is currently being built in Las Vegas.
Featuring 50 shopping outlets, a Cineworld cinema, a hotel with 178 four-star rooms and some five-star suites, several bars and restaurant, the Resorts World Birmingham is set to transform the appeal of the regions leisure offerings.
Peter Brooks, Gentings UK President and CEO, said of the new resort: "We are very excited following a two-year build program that Resorts World Birmingham is coming to life. We cant wait for the first major milestone in that journey when we open our doors for the first time on October 21. There will be much more to experience at Resorts World Birmingham as the weeks go by and the resort becomes fully operational. We have a full programme of exciting events between our opening day and the end of the year which will demonstrate the wide range of experiences available to our guests. We are thrilled that, for the time, Resorts World Birmingham will bring the uniqueness and excitement of a large scale integrated resort offer to the West Midlands region and beyond."
Casino, Cinema and Hotel to Open After the Resorts Unveiling
As mentioned, the cinema, hotel and casino are opening at a later date.
The 11-screen Cineworld, which includes an IMAX screen, is set to open two days after the resort does on October 23. The Genting Hotel and Spa opens for business on November 2.
Most appealing to readers of PokerNews is the opening of the Genting International casino, which will take place on October 26, coinciding with the launch of the new James Bond film, Spectre.
The casino is expected to be the largest in the United Kingdom thanks to its 31 table games, more than 100 slots, its outdoor gaming area, and two luxury high-stakes gaming areas.
Genting received a large casino license, often referred to in the media as a Super Casino license, in June 2011 by Solihull Council, and was granted planning permission in 2012. When opened, the casino will cover some 11% of the entire Resorts World Complex.
It was hoped that the casino would be open in time for the ninth leg of the 2015 Genting Poker Series (GPS), but those plans appear to have been shelved. When the 2015 GPS was announced, there was a Resorts World Birmingham stop provisionally listed, but the GPS website now shows that the 200+20 buy-in GPS Mini on October 21 will head to Star City instead, which is also in Birmingham.
