UK & Ireland PokerNews Round-Up: Southampton to Home a Super Casino
The Hampshire city of Southampton is set to be the location for the United Kingdom's latest so-called "Super Casino" after Aspers Casino was granted a license to build what will be its third such venue.
Aspers fought off stiff competition from the likes of Grosvenor Casinos and Genting Casinos in the race to be chosen to develop a new large casino. Now it has the green light to open a casino, building work will commence shortly at Southampton's Royal Pier and is expected to be completed by 2021.
No doubt that this new Aspers Casino will host poker events, which takes us nicely to the goings on up in Glasgow this week where the Genting Poker Series hosted a 220 Main Event. A total of 250 entries were processed and a 50,000 prize pool created, beating the 35,000 guarantee.
The last man standing was Derek Leach who got his hands on the winner's trophy and an impressive 12,550 for his initial investment.
An even larger prize is set to be awarded this weekend when the partypoker Grand Prix Poker Tour heads to the home of Leeds United, Elland Road. The $250,000 guaranteed Main Event only costs $109 to buy into, yet guarantees the eventual champion will leave Yorkshire's largest city with at least $35,000 in their partypoker account.
Over to the online poker world now where the PokerStars player known as "HKongBanker" received a nice deposit into his account due to a fourth-place finish in the Sunday Million. A deal struck between the final four players secured a $90,000 payday for the British player, by far the largest enjoyed by a UK player on Sunday.
Another British player doing more than okay for himself recently is Christopher "NigDawG" Brammer. Formerly ranked number one in the world for online tournament poker by PocketFives, Brammer had slipped out of the UK top 20 recently. However, a runner-up finish in the PokerStars Super Tuesday has helped propel him back into the limelight; Brammer currently resides in 13th place in the UK standings.
Finally for this week's round-up, the news that Unibet Poker recently dealt its 300 millionth hand of poker on its standalone network and continues to celebrate the landmark by giving away huge cash prizes. The winner of the 300 millionth hand won 4,800 despite the hand being hit at the 0.02/0.04 tables, and with cash being awarded every 100,000 hands until the 315 millionth hand is dealt, there's plenty of opportunity to win big just for playing your favorite games at Unibet.
