GPL Results, Standings, and Schedule After Week 8: Montreal, London Carry Leads Into Summer Series
Welcome to the weekly rundown of the Global Poker League here on PokerNews. In this space, all of the past week's results from the GPL will be listed, followed by league standings and a look at the following week's schedule.
The end of May saw the eighth week of the GPLs Regular Season finish up, meaning after a one-week hiatus comes the much anticipated GPL Summer Series featuring 33 days worth of live heads-up battles filmed on location in the leagues Las Vegas studio.
Following the last round of online battles, the Montreal Nationals will carry the Americas Conference lead into the break after having moved out in front the week before. Martin Jacobson grabbed 10 total points for the Nationals in during the six-max matches on Tuesday, May 24, taking third in one and winning the other. Then Jason Lavallee gave the team nine more points after sweeping all three heads-up games versus Anthony Zinno of the Las Vegas Moneymakers to round out a very positive week for Montreal.
Those successes helped Montreal become the first GPL team to crack the 100-point barrier, as they sit with 106 total points and an 11-point lead over the LA Sunset heading into the break.
Meanwhile the London Royals were the stars of the Eurasia Conference during Week 8, having entered the week eight points back of leader Moscow Wolverines, then surging ahead to take a five-point lead over Moscow into the break.
The week began strong on Tuesday for the Royals with Igor Kurganov taking runner-up in the first six-max match won by Mike Leah of the Paris Aviators, then Royals manager Liv Boeree winning the second six-max match to make it a 12-point day for London. Then on Wednesday, May 25 the Royals Sam Trickett won two of three games versus Vladimir Troyanovskiy of the Moscow Wolverines to ensure London would take over the lead from Moscow.
