Pennsylvania Radiologist Wins Second Successful Super Seniors at the 2016 WSOP
A 65-year-old New Hope, Penn., radiologist won $230,626 and the 2016 World Series of Poker Super Seniors Championship title on Tuesday.
James Moore was elated to win his first WSOP bracelet after outlasting a field of 1,476 players, all of whom were 65 or older.
"This is an unbelievable thrill for me," Moore said. "It's every poker player's dream, and mine just came true."
This was the second time the WSOP ran a $1,000 Super Seniors Championship event, open only to players ages 65 and up, with the inaugural event running in 2015. The victory marked Moore's second cash at the WSOP, after he finished 149th place in the 50-plus Seniors Championship in 2014.
Win or lose, Moore said he enjoys the experience these age-limited events provide.
"There's no question this is a terrific experience for those who play in it," he said. "The men and women are just so kind. It's not just a poker experience. It's a social experience beyond compare."
Moore is apparently not the only one that feels this way, with the 2016 WSOP Seniors Championship drawing record numbers this year, and the Super Seniors seeing just under the 1,533 players that entered in 2015. Jon Andlovec won that event, and held the overnight lead after Day 1 this year, ultimately finishing in 20th.
New Orleans, Louisiana's Fred Berger was the only previous WSOP bracelet winner to make the final table, but could do no better than sixth.
Moore beat 75-year-old Richardson, Texas business owner Charles Barker heads up after a back-and-forth tilt that saw Moore come back from 3-1 chip deficit. Barker earned $142,461 for his runner-up finish.
The event's $1.328 million prize pool paid out the top 223 finishers. Legends of the game including Donnacha O'Dea, TJ Cloutier, and David Sklansky cashed.
"I was feeling really good about this tournament and my chances entering Day 3," Moore said. "I had lost a lot of my stack on Day 2, but today I felt good. Things seemed to work better for me. It wasn't a cake walk, but things worked out."
