Top of Counts Still Tight at Day 6 Dinner of WSOP Main Event
The 2016 World Series of Poker Main Event has reached the Day 6 dinner break. Unlike last year, when Joe McKeehen leaped out to a big lead, no player has managed to separate himself from the pack as the field continues to wind closer to the final 27, which will signal the end of the day at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.
With 39 left, its online legend Cliff Josephy who holds the lead with 19.01 million. He's trailed by fellow American Michael Ruane (18.735 million), followed by Milwaukee's Mike Shin (18.185 million), start-of-day leader Jerry Wong (17.935 million), and Britain's Matthew Moss (16.575 million).
Josephy got the best of Dan Colman, check-raising all in on a board of J?5?4?10? after leading the flop and getting raised by preflop aggressor Colman. Josephy got a fold to surpass 11 million a short time later busted Dietrich Fast when Fast's aces were cracked by Josephy's kings.
In a big pot that made the updates late in the level, Ruane tangled with Ronald Giles. The latter called a raise from the former, who was in early position, and the flop came J?9?4?. Ruane bet 300,000 and received a call. Giles checked the 10? and Ruane bet 750,000. Giles made it 1.5 million, and Ruane called. On the 3? river, Giles bet 1.3 million and folded to an all-in shove from Ruane, saving his last 3 million.
Giles would fall before the end of the level in 41st place.
Another player sent to the rail was 2015 bracelet winner Paul Hoefer, with Ruane adding to his stack when his jacks held up against Hoefer's A?5?.
Just before the level ended, formidable high-stakes cash player Jason Les went bust, running his jacks into Tom Marchese's queens and then nines into James Obst's jacks.
Other players seeing the end of their tournaments in what proved to be a fast-paced three levels before dinner included Chris Klodnicki (45th), Jan Suchanek (49th), Tony Gregg (50th), and Brian Yoon (60th).
Play resumes at 7:50 p.m. local time.
