According to the PokerStars Blog, Day 2 began with just 21 players remaining in contention for the title. The field was narrowed down to the seven-max final table after Turkey's ?zgr "phaplap" Arda, who is registered at PokerStars in Cyprus, eliminated Germany's "LoosControl" in eighth place for $8,780.
At this point, Arda had almost twice as many chips of his nearest opponent and more than four times the amount of chips than Gruissem. However, 2014 WSOP Main Event winner Martin "M.nosbocaJ" Jacobson quickly grabbed the lead six hands into play at the final table after he doubled up against Arda.
Arda then grabbed some chips back and eliminated Poland's "blackaces93" in seventh place for $10,930 when his ace-jack suited outflipped his opponent's pocket nines in a battle of the blinds. While a nine appeared on the flop to give "blackaces93" a set, it also gave Arda a flush draw which was completed on the turn.
In another battle of the blinds, Arda eliminated China's "ChrisACEA" in sixth place for $13,607 after his ace-two got there against his opponent's pocket fives.
More blind-on-blind carnage occurred when David "davaman" Lopez jammed ten-nine suited and was eliminated in fifth place for $19,164 after Gruissem called with king-queen suited and the board bricked out for both players. Gruissem and Arda swapped the lead before Gruissem regained control when he eliminated Brazil's Felipe "lipe piv" Boianovsky in fourth place for $26,992 after his pocket eights held against his opponent's pocket sixes.
A few hands later, Gruissem eliminated Jacobson in third place for $38,017 after his ace-queen was good against ace-seven.
Gruissem entered heads-up play with a 3:2 chip advantage against Arda before extending this to a more than 4:1 advantage. However, Arda was able to battle back and reduce Gruissem's edge to a 2:1 chip advantage before the final hand of the tournament took place.
They got it all in preflop with Guissem holding ace-ten and Arda holding pocket-nines. An ace spiked the flop to give Gruissem a huge edge in the hand and Arda was unable to improve his hand on the turn and river to be eliminated in second place for $53,544.
Meanwhile, Gruissem shipped his first WCOOP title for $75,414 to add to his many impressive poker accomplishments.
