Railbird Report: Gus Hansen Plays Massive PLO Pots on Poker After Dark

9 min read
Gus Hansen

On Wednesday, March 7, Gus Hansen returned to Poker After Dark for the first time since 2010 for the second and final day of "Racks of Lamb", a week dubbed after high-stakes superstar Ben Lamb. The action was broadcast on PokerGO and featured $100/$200 pot-limit Omaha with a mandatory $400 straddle before the stakes doubled to $200/$400 with a mandatory $800 straddle later in the game.

In addition to Hansen, the line-up included Sam Soverel, Matt Kirk, Chris MacFarland, Brian Rast, Len Ashby and of course Lamb, who, on the previous day, booked the biggest profit at the table of more than $250,000.

PokerGO tweeted several of the biggest hands, most of which involved Hansen. While Hansen caused some trouble for his opponents, it was an up and down session for him.

Aces vs Kings vs Queens, vs Eight-Six-Three-Deuce

In an early pot, Soverel called Hansen's double straddle of $800 with K?K?9?4? before Lamb raised to $3,800 with Q?Q?J?8?. McFarland called with A?A?8?2? as did Hansen with 8?6?3?2?. Soverel then three-bet for a pot-sized bet of $19,500 and Lamb called before MacFarland jammed all in for $49,400.

Hansen, who had $26,300 behind, thought about it for a minute, before he called and the other two players followed along to create a massive $121,000 main pot with side pots of $37,000 and $14,000.

Three clubs appeared on both boards to give Soverel a huge scoop and a great start to the match.

Top Set and a Straight vs Bottom Two and a Flush Draw

Things turned around quickly for Hansen at the expense of Kirk. With $17,400 already in the pot, Kirk, holding 10?8?6?3?, bet $15,000 with bottom two pair and a flush draw on Q?10?8? flop. Hansen, with Q?Q?J?9? for a straight and outs to a full-house, declared himself all-in for $59,400.

Rast, with K?K?Q?10? also in the hand, got out of the way, and Kirk and Hansen agreed to run it twice after Kirk called. Hansen scooped a huge pot of $136,800 after diamonds appeared on the turn and river on both boards which did nothing for Kirk.

Kings vs Queens vs a Double Suited Ace-Queen

The stakes moved up to $200/$400 with a mandatory $800 straddle and Kirk was able to get some revenge in a three-way pot involving Hansen and Lamb.

Hansen limped from the hijack with K?K?8?4? and Lamb over-limped from the button for $800 with Q?Q?8?5?. Kirk, in the big blind, raised to $4,200 with A?Q?7?4?. Hansen called before Lamb squeezed to $17,800. Kirk called and action was back on Hansen. Hansen shoved all in and was just about beat to the pot by both Lamb and Kirk.

Kirk scooped up both the $90,100 main pot and the $85,800 side pot after the board ran out 9?3?5?J?A? with just a pair of aces being the best hand.

Aces vs a Monster Draw

Hansen was then able to win a massive pot of $167,000 against Rast to cap off a huge night for him and his fans. There was already $111,000 in the pot before the flop came 2?J?9?.

Rast, with A?A?9?7?, fired all in for $28,000 and Hansen called with a monster draw to a flush and straight with 10?8?7?6?.

The duo ran it twice and Hansen finished the session in the black after the 8? on the first board gave him a straight, and the 8? on the river of the second board made him a straight again.

Catching Up on High Stakes Action: Three Biggest Pots of The Week

March 6 was full of action online, producing eight of the biggest pots of the week on $50/$100 no-limit hold'em and $100/$200 pot-limit Omaha. The two biggest pots involved "CooL1992" and "libby493" colliding stacks in huge all-in pots within a few minutes.

1) "CooL1992" wins a $84,829 Pot (848 Big Blinds) from "libby493" (March 6)
($50/$100 NLHE 6-Max)

The action began with "MMAsherdog" opening for $300 from under the gun and "limitless" calling from the button. "CooL1992" three-bet to $1,800 from the small blind before "libby493" four-bet from the big blind to $5,300. "MMAasherdog" and "limitless" both folded before "CooL1992" five-bet to $12,250 and got a call from "libby493".

"CooL1992" checked the 7?8?5? flop "libby493" jammed all in for $29,805. "CooL1992" had his opponent covered and called.

"libby493"9?9?25.96%

"CooL1992" was a huge 3-1 favorite with pocket kings with his opponent needing a nine for a set or a six for a straight.

Neither of those cards came as the 5? appeared on the turn and the 5? appeared on the river to give "CooL1992" a massive pot worth $84,829, which was the biggest of the week.

2) "libby493 wins a $59,131 Pot (591 Big Blinds) from "CooL1992" (March 6)
($50/$100 NLHE 6-Max)

Minutes before the biggest hand of the week, the same duo of "CooL1992" and "libby493" faced off in another big hand with different results.

"CooL1992" opened to $300 from the hijack and called a three-bet of $1,170 from "libby493" from the cutoff after the action was folded back around to him.

"CooL1992" check-called a bet of $1,303 from his opponent after the flop came 2?6?4?. A similar pattern followed after the Q? appeared on the turn with this time "CooL1992" check-calling a bet of $3,200.

The action heated up after the K? completed the board. "CooL1992" once again checked and "libby493" bet $6,200. "CooL1992" jammed all in effectively covering the $17,058 behind in his opponent's stack. A call followed.

"CooL1992" turned over K?6? for two-pair. However, this proved to be no good as "libby493" turned over 4?4? for a set and collected a huge pot of $59,131.

3) Ben "Sauce123" Sulsky wins a $58,401 Pot (292 Big Blinds) from "BERRI SWEET" (March 6)
($100/$200 PLO 6-Max)

In a heads-up match, "BERRI SWEET" opened from the button to $600 before Ben "Sauce123" Sulsky three-bet to $1,800. "BERRI SWEET" four-bet to $5,400 and Sulsky called.

Sulsky led out for $10,797 after the 7?6?J? flop appeared. "BERRI SWEET" raised more than enough to cover the $13,004 behind in his opponent's stack and Sulsky called.

PlayerHandEquity on 7?6?J?

"BERRI SWEET"Q?A?A?4?11.71%

"BERRI SWEET" was well-behind needing an ace to complete a set or a pair of running jacks on the turn and river to save his hand.

The duo decided to run it twice. Sulsky won a big pot of $58,401 after "BERRI SWEET" was unable to get a save either time with the 10? on the turn and the 8? on the river completing the first board, and the 2? on the turn and the 5? on the river completing the second board.
