Less than two years ago, Maria Konnikova decided to write a book centered on poker, a game she knew nothing about. She was fortunate enough to enlist Poker Hall of Famer Erik Seidel as a coach, and before long she was sitting behind players like Jason Koon and Ike Haxton.

Dr. Konnikova, who had a psychology PhD, went from not knowing how many cards were in a deck to topping a field of 290 entries in Januarys PokerStars Caribbean Adventure 2018 $1,650 PCA National for $84,600. In addition to the major title, she locked up a Platinum Pass valued at $30,000.

A writer for The New Yorker, Konnikova took a sabbatical to pursue poker and has won more than $232,000, including $57,519 for finishing runner-up in the 2018 APPT Macau Event #13: HK$20,000 NLH.

Now, her story is garnering love from the mainstream media, most notably a recent profile by Claudia Dreifus of The New York Times.

In the article, Konnikova talked about her decision to pursue poker, her experience in the game, and her plans for the future.
