Danny van Zijp Wins WPT DeepStacks Brussels for $123,824
On Sunday, nineteen players came back for the final day of the �1,200 Main Event of the WPT DeepStacks in Brussels. They were all after the top prize of �110,000 ($123,824) and a �2,000 WPT DS European Championship package. In the end, it was Dutch player Danny van Zijp who secured himself of the victory after defeating Frenchman Jose Astima in the final heads-up.
With nineteen players remaining, it was still a long way to the official final table. Miroslav Prasil, Ognjen Jakara, Guillaume Darcourt, Aleksander Da Silva, and Paul Berende were among the early casualties. Berende lost a huge pot with ace-king against ten-nine of diamonds when the flop came ace-deuce-six all diamonds. After that, he busted in fifteenth place losing his last chips with pocket fives against pocket tens.
Other players that didn't make it to the final nine were David Hu, Gerry van Aalst, Christophe de Meulder, Alain Bauer, and Jean Seber. Seber finished in tenth place for �10,700 and the final nine players sat down for the final table.
On the final table, Jean-Philippe Schoonbrood from the Netherlands finished in ninth place (�10,700/$12,044) despite an early double with ace-eight against pocket kings. Cheng-Wei Yin, the only player from Belgium on the final table, couldn't keep the title in Brussels after his bust-out in eighth place for �13,550 ($15,253).
Tal Sardal (seventh, �17,550/$19,699), Cyrel Mira (sixth, �23,000/$25,891), Rico Roumen (fifth, �30,000/$33,771) and Peter Jaksland (fourth, �40,000/$45,027) followed the Belgian to the rail. After that, Paul Van Oort, Danny Van Zijp and Jose Astima secured themselves of at least �53,000 with still over �100,000 for the winner.
Dutchman Van Oort had to settle for third place (�53,000/$59,661) after losing the crucial coinflip with pocket fours against queen-jack suited.
The deciding heads-up didn't take a long time but a setup ended it all. Astima went all in with pocket tens and chip leader Van Zijp had the easy call with pocket jacks. The best hand remained on top and Van Zijp was crowned as the winner of the �1,200 Main Event World Poker Tour DeepStacks in Brussels for �110,000.
