Rutger Hennen

Rutger Hennen is the 2024 WPT Prime Amsterdam Main Event champion. The Dutchman's maiden live victory earned him a cool 208,095 and a seat to the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas.

Hennen came out on top of a bumper 1,340-strong crowd, who created a 1,289,400 prize pool which the top 168 finishers shared. Govert Metaal, the 2023 WPT Prime Amsterdam Main Event champion Philip Hollederer, and David Boyaciyan were among the in-the-money finishers.

Twelve players returned for the final day's action, but the field was soon cut down to the final table of nine. Sven Stok, Heskey Selva, and Englishman Max Deveson busted, leaving nine finalists in contention for the title.

Thirty-two hands into the final table action saw Raoul van Wersch lose his tournament life. Van Wersch min-raised to 200,000 with pocket jacks before calling off the 1,400,000 he had behind when Patrik Papanek three-bet all-in. Papenek turned pocket queens onto their backs, which held on an ace-high board.

Denis Karakashi busted two hands later. Having lost all but 50,000 chips, Karakashi was forced all-in from the small blind after Vasyl Vasylyshyn had opened from earlier position. It was jack-eight for Vasylyshyn against six-five suited for Karakashi. A jack on the river sealed the all-in player's fate.

Only four more hands played out before Papanek saw his stack disappear in front of his eyes. A raise to 275,000 from Jeffrey Jol in the cutoff was three-bet to 775,000 by Vasylyshyn on the button, only for Papanek to four-bet all-in for 2,600,000. Jol reshoved, and Vasylyshyn ducked out of the way. Papanek's king-queen was in a world of trouble against Jol's ace-king. Papanek caught a queen on the river, but it was too late because Jol turned an ace.

The final six became five with the demise of Matin Talbei. On the 133rd hand of the final table, with blinds of 125,000/250,000/250,000a, Denmark's Talbei lost a coinflip against Vasylyshyn. The former min-raised to 500,000 from under the gun, Hennen called in late position, and Talbei moved all-in for 525,000. Both players called and checked to the river of a seven-six-deuce-eight-nine board, Vasylyshyn folding when Hennen bet 1,200,000. Hennen's king-ten had improved to a straight, crushing Tablei's pocket threes.

Jol was the next finalist heading to the cashier's desk when he open-shoved 17 big blinds from late position with ace-jack, and Hennan called on the button with the dominating ace-king. Hennen's king-kicker played, and Jol was gone.

Four-handed play ended when start-of-the-day chip leader Vasylyshyn clashed with Hennen. Vasylyshyn min-raised to 800,000 before four-bet jamming for 11,500,000 after Hennen had three-bet to 2,000,000 in the small blind. Hennen called and showed pocket jacks, which were racing against ace-king. The five community cards ran out void of aces, kings, or unlikely straights, and Vasylyshyn's tournament ended.

A few hands later, heads-up was set when Robert Schiffbauer became the latest Hennen victim. Hennen moved all-in from the small blind with six-three, and Schiffbauer looked him up with jack-ten for his last 3.5 big blinds. Hennen improved to a straight on the turn, sending Schiffbauer to the showers.

Hennen held a massive 113 to 17 big blind advantage over Maksym Klopotok going into the heads-up battle. It did not take Hennen overly long to finish the job. Although Klopotok doubled up in back-to-back hands, Hennen seemed to have the masure of his opponent and began widening the gap again.

The final hand, the 297th of the final table, saw Hennen open to 2,000,000 and then call the 12,400,000 shove from Klopotok. Hennen showed pocket sevens, and Klopotok ace-eight. Hennen's red sevens remained best on the all-diamond ten-high flop, reducing Klopotok's outs. An offsuit six followed by the nine of heart completed the community cards, confirming Klopotok's elimination and Hennen's impressive victory.
