Biography

Alan "Ari" Engel is a Canadian poker player and two-time WSOP bracelet winner and 13-time WSOP Circuit ring winner. Engel has cashed for over $8.3 million as of July 2023.

Biography

As a child, Engel spent 14 hours a day reading sacred texts at an Orthodox Jewish theological school near Chicago. His father was a rabbi, and after graduating from New York University in a double major in finance and business management, Engel had hoped to end up on Wall Street.

However, poker had other ideas. Ten days after turning $150 into $15,000 playing online, Engel quit his job to devote himself to poker full time.

Engel eventually headed to Las Vegas, cashing in the WSOP for the first time in 2006. Two years later he cashed at the Aussie Millions in Melbourne for the first time, and by 2011 he was playing in Europe. He finished sixth in the EPT Prague Main Event for over $150,000, the biggest cash of his career.

Throughout his career, Engel would amass cashes in the Philippines, England, Spain, Peru and his native Canada.

WSOP Circuit

Engel is one of the most prolific grinders of the WSOP Circuit and has 13 Circuit rings to show for it. Engel is tied with Daniel Lowery in third on the all-time Circuit ring list, trailing only Maurice Hawkins and Joshua Reichard.

Engel won his first Circuit ring in 2007 and won his latest in July 2023 in an online event in Michigan.

2016 Aussie Millions

In 2016, Engel won the Aussie Millions Main Event for A$1.6 million (~$1.1 million). He defeated Tony Dunst heads-up at a final table featuring Samantha Abernathy and Kitty Kuo.

Engel also finished tenth in the 2018 Aussie Millions Main Event, and picked up a second Aussie Millions ring in 2019.

Engel at the World Series of Poker

Over the course of his career, Engel has won ten WSOP Circuit rings and two bracelets. His first came in 2019, winning Event #48: $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em for $427,399.

In 2021, he doubled his tally with victory in Event #9: $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship. He defeated Zachary Milchman after a six-hour heads-up battle.
