Strategy with Kristy: Run It Once Elite Pro Nick Rampone, Pt. 1
Nick Rampone, also known as "purecash25" to the online poker community, is the latest guest on the Strategy with Kristy podcast. As a Run It Once Elite Pro, he is no stranger to discussing poker strategy. Although Rampone is primarily a tournament player, he also spends a fair amount of time competing in cash games.
In Part 1 of his interview, Rampone discusses an interesting Zoom Poker hand he played on PokerStars, but first explains a common pitfall players have when playing this fast-paced variation of the game.
Here is a snippet from that part of the podcast:
"My biggest issue with Zoom is that I tend to get caught up in the pace. It's happening so fast, and I tend to let the actual pace of gameplay affect how I'm playing my hands. I'll just find myself playing too many hands, quite frankly. I'll see a hand and think, 'Oh, this would be a good spot to three-bet because this guy is going to fast-fold his hand. He's not going to want to stick around and fight for this pot.' I feel like I had seen a lot of those opportunities, but I'm quickly realizing that I'm kind of just tricking myself. A big thing for me is to tighten up my game, realize what are actually legitimate good spots and to take advantage of them the appropriate amount of times. I don't want to be taking every single little spot that I think could be good and making a bluff, a three-bet or even an open. You could be sitting there under the gun and all five other players could have already folded. It's really tempting to just be under the gun and say, 'I'm going to give this eight-nine suited a try here and see if people fold.' Long story short, I'm working on tightening up my game."
