WPT GTO Trainer Hands of the Week: Defending Your Button in a Cash Game

Today youll be playing common spots in a cash game where you defend the Button by calling after a single open raise. In todays selection the position of the Villain will change after each hand is played while your position remains static.

This means Villains range will change from hand to hand as well. Playing against changing Villain positions will give you insight into how the width of Villains range can affect your play and allow you to practice these situations in a simulated environment.

Hands like top pair will often be bet for value across all three streets against a Late Position player, but may be checked on one or even two streets against an Early Position player.

More hands should be in your bluffing ranges against a Late Position player, since their range is wider and will have more postflop misses that can fold to your bets or raises.

Always be aware of Villains bet sizing. When facing very small bets on the turn, you should be more willing to raise them with many hands. You do not want to allow Villain to set the price of showdown when they are out of position against you.

You should raise their small turn bets not only with strong hands but with semi-bluffs as well. The smaller the bet size relative to the pot, the wider your raising range should be. This concept applies to most No-Limit Holdem situations.

Lastly, pay attention to any blockers when deciding whether or not to call on the river with a hand that can only beat bluffs. If you hold key cards that would be in their value betting range, you make it a little more likely for them to hold a bluff.
