WPT GTO Trainer Hands of the Week: Defending Your Button Deepstacked

Today were focusing on a cash game spot where you are against a tough player in Middle Position who opens to 3BBs and you call on the Button.

In this scenario both players have fairly wide opening ranges. The key difference is that the Middle Positions range is uncapped, including all the combinations of AA/KK/AK. Your range is a little more condensed and capped in this spot and does not include those premium combos that are still in MP2s range.

Another important factor in this scenario is that since both players have wide ranges and the stacks are quite deep related to the size of the pot postflop, the player in position has a significant advantage. This means that you being in position will often get to float with any sort of reasonable equity and often bet when checked to, even without much equity. It will also be possible to attack, sometimes across multiple streets, when your opponent caps their postflop range by checking to you.

In addition, you can utilize key blockers along with turn cards that favor your range to raise your when your opponent follows up the continuation bet with a 2nd barrel on the turn. When you are deepstacked in position with wide ranges you can often be more creative with aggression and make life difficult for your opponent.

You should also note that many of the strategies you will utilize in this scenario have a very mixed GTO implementation. So while there is a lot of room for aggression and creativity in this scenario, in real-world application youll want to be utilizing some sort of randomizer to ensure a proper mix. Be cautious of always taking an aggressive action in spots where you should be mixing in passive play or you could be opening yourself up to exploitation due to betting pattern tells.
