WPT GTO Trainer Hands of the Week: EP 5x Open Vs BTN Call
Today youll be playing out of position as the preflop raiser in a cash game where the preflop raise size is 5 big blinds. Due to the larger preflop raise size, the pot on the flop is already 11.5 big blinds. Inflated preflop pots are a regular feature of many small stakes cash games. This lowers the Stack to Pot Ratio (SPR).
Against a GTO opponent, youll want to mix your play between checks and c-bets on the flop. However, against many opponents you can simply utilize a high frequency, small size c-bet strategy. Most opponents will fail to exploit this strategy correctly.
That said, on flops that strongly favor the preflop caller you can consider checking at a higher frequency. On flops that maintain the preflop raisers nut advantage, you can c-bet at a high frequency and use a larger c-bet size.
When you find yourself with a missed draw or backdoor draw on the river, look for opportunities to bluff if you hold a blocker to a big hand. Often you can use a big bet sizing or even an overbet for your bluff when you hold a key blocker.
Youll regularly use this same large sizing or overbet when you hold made hands and are value betting against a likely capped Villain range. This occurs most frequently when Villain checks back on the turn in a spot where theyd likely bet most big hands.
When deciding whether or not to call a potential bluff, always pay attention to how high up you are in your own range. If you have one of the better possible hands you can have in that situation, you should consider calling. The goal is to avoid situations where you are folding nearly all of your range and are an easy target for your opponent to exploit.
