Hands of the Week: 3-Betting from the Big Blind

This is a tricky spot that occurs often in Tournaments.

In a tournament with 50 big blind stacks an opponent open raises to 2.5 big blinds from middle position, and you three-bet to 10 big blinds from the big blind and they call.

You have a standard three-betting hand range for this spot and your opponent has a somewhat capped calling range.

This model shows a common spot where you are out of position against a tough opponent on the flop after you three-bet preflop.

Against most opponents, you will have a fairly high continuation-bet frequency in this spot and you can often size down your continuation bets to 25% of the pot on dry flops.

Remember that missed draws are often good candidates to round out a bluffing range and provide overall balance to your aggressive lines.

You will often be put to tough decisions with marginal hands, with the correct decision often coming down to understanding the effects of blockers and the specific suits you hold.

To see more examples and test your skills, you can play through five solved random hands from this scenario.
