Ivey Spikes a Four

Dan Shak and his 2010 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge trophy
Dan Shak and his 2010 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge trophy

From middle position, Sorel Mizzi raised to 1,500. Tom Dwan called from the cutoff seat, Daniel Cates called from the button, Phil Ivey called from the small blind and then Dan Shak closed the preflop action with a call from the big blind.

With 7,500 in the middle, the flop came down {9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and action checked to Mizzi. He bet 5,500 before Dwan and Cates got out of the way. Ivey tossed in the call and then play fell on Shak. The 2010 champion of this event took some time and then check-raised to 15,500. Mizzi folded, but Ivey made the call, creating a little rematch between him and Shak. Back in 2010 when Shak won the event, he had to defeat Ivey heads up to take the title.

The turn brought the {3-Spades} and both players checked. They also checked after the river completed the board with the {4-Spades}. First, Ivey showed the {4-Diamonds} and Shak stood up and leaned over the table to get a better look.

"You gotta be kidding me," said Shak as Ivey rolled over his other card to show the {8-Diamonds} for a flopped flush draw. Shak then showed the {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} for a better flush draw, but was outdrawn on the river to lose the pot.

Shak laughed a little and Ivey smirked as he raked in the pot. Maybe the two were fondly remembering two years ago when Shak beat Ivey heads up in this tournament to win the title. On the final hand, Ivey was all in with the {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and had Shak dominated with the {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs}. Shak flopped a seven to win the hand and held from there to win the tournament. This hand here gives Ivey a tiny bit of revenge.
