"spinach_kale" Wins Borgata SPO Online Event #3 for $6,300

The 2020 Borgata Spring Poker Open Online Series saw its first high-stakes Omaha champion crowned in Event #3: $15,000 GTD PLO 6-Max Rebuy, where "spinach_kale" topped a field of 48 entries to take home the first-place prize of $6,300.

A late registration and rebuy period of more than two-and-a-half hours was available, ultimately closing with 60 rebuys that were punctuated by 22 add-ons from the 28 players still in contention when the add-on period closed.

From there, it took less than an hour for the tournament to reach two tables and under 90 minutes for the final table of six to be reached. However, only five paid and "tc_ownz" wound up becoming the sixth-place finisher after being eliminated by "MattEMenz" via straight-over-straight.

"Jaggyboy13" and "dhimp20" then fell in succession to Anthony "Flawlessbinkage" Maio, who took a sizeable chip lead into three-handed play. "spinach_kale" was third in chips but pulled even with "MattEMenz" and ultimately knocked him out after hitting the nut flush on the river against "MattEMenz's" set of queens.

Maio took the chip lead into the heads-up match and pulled away briefly, but then lost momentum as "spinach_kale" was able to claw back over the course of about 15 minutes, ultimately gaining the chip lead and never looking back from there.

"spinach_kale" is no stranger to the poker world, both online and live, with over $7 million in live winnings going back to 2006 and an online history predating that.

On one of the first hands at Level 37 with blinds of 10,000/20,000, "spinach_kale" completed the small blind and "Flawlessbinkage" checked.

The flop came {8-Spades}{7-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} and "Flawlessbinkage" check-called a bet of 20,000.

"spinach_kale" Backs Into a Flush

After more than half of Level 35 (8,000/16,000) was played with no showdown, a limped pot with "Flawlessbinkage" on the button and "spinach_kale" in the big blind" saw the flop come {7-Spades}{5-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}.

Each player put 16,000 in before the turn came {2-Hearts}. "spinach_kale" made another half-pot-sized bet of 32,000 and "Flawlessbinkage" called once more.

On the last hand of Level 33 with blinds of 6,000/12,000, "MattEMenz" defended his big blind to an open of 24,000 from "spinach_kale", who was on the button.

The flop dropped {q-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and both players checked. The turn was {4-Diamonds} and "MattEMenz" checked again. "spinach_kale" made a bet of 25,500 and "MattEMenz" check-raised to 130,500.

"spinach_kale" three-bet to 235,500 and "MattEMenz" went all in for slightly more, quickly receiving a call for hands to be tabled.

"MattEMenz": {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{9-Spades}{4-Hearts}
"spinach_kale": {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

"MattEMenz" had found himself with top set and a trivial flush draw, ultimately in need of fading the outs that "spinach_kale" had to either a set of aces or the nut flush. Unfortunately for him, the river {3-Diamonds} smashed resulted in his tournament life coming crashing down as "spinach_kale" wound up filling up to the nut flush to eliminate "MattEMenz" in third place for $2,250, taking the tournament heads up in the process.
