Leo Rizzo Bags the Big Stack on Day 1b of R$25,000 Millions Championship

It was a holiday in Sao Paulo, Brazil today which led to a smaller attendance for Day 1b of the R$25,000 BSOP Millions Championship being held at the WTC Sheraton. Following a healthy 187 entries yesterday, there were a total of 124 players that took to the felt today, and just 40 advanced to Day 2. It comes as no surprise that Leo Rizzo bagged the largest stack today with 700,000 chips as he often plays by the "Win or Bust" strategy.

Rizzo has been known to be all-in blind on the first hand of tournament and today was no different, turning his starting stack of 100,000 chips into over 200,000 on the very first hand. On multiple occasions, Rizzo could be heard throughout the room shouting "Po! Po! Po!", his common phrase after winning a big hand. Rizzo took the early chip lead on Day 1b and managed to coast through the last few levels to bag the lead, just shy of Day 1a leader, Gabriel Nobrego (738,000).

Day 1b Action

It was a slower start to the day which was to be expected with it being a holiday in Brazil. However, poker players don't often take holidays, and the ballroom at the WTC Sheraton was still packed with excitement for the largest event in Latin American history. Many notables joined the field throughout the day including some from north of the equator. Santiago Plante (404,000), David Miscikowski (216,000), and Neel Murthy (eliminated), all made the trek to the southern hemisphere to take part in this event.

Meanwhile, the field was still littered with notable local players who thrived throughout 10 levels. Pablo Brito Silva (539,000), Joao Vieira (539,000), Pedro Neves (398,000), and Alexandre Mantovani (176,000) all have sophisticated poker resumes and advanced to Day 2. After an all-Brazilian final table in the Super High Roller that wrapped up earlier today, the Millions Championship is also shaping up to be a who's-who battling for a massive prizepool.

Players who failed to advance thus far will have one more opportunity tomorrow on Day 1c which gets underway at 2:00 p.m. local time. This will be the final starting flight for this R$10,000,000 guaranteed event with registration open until approximately midnight. This is expected to be the largest of the three starting flights as the tournament staff braces for an influx of players.

The PokerNews team will once again be on the tournament floor to bring you all of the updates throughout this event en route to crowning a champion.

Oliveira on the Right Side of a Cooler

Level 10 : Blinds 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

The action folded around to the blinds who engaged in some preflop raising, each sticking in 55,000 before the board was laid out. The flop came K?4?4? and now both players opted to check through to the A? on the turn and the J? on the river.

Emanuel Oliveira led out with a bet of 65,000 on the river and the big blind shoved all in as the big stack. Oliveira snap-called for his stack of 145,000 and showed A?A? for the best full house. His opponent flashed J?J? for an inferior full house before passing over the chips.

Plante Bombs the River

Level 10 : Blinds 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

Hermogenes Gelonezi raised to 10,000 in early position and Santiago Plante defended from the big blind. The flop fell J?4?3? and both players checked to the 4? on the turn.

Plante led out with a bet of 17,000 and Gelonezi called to see the 3? on the river. Plante reached back for a large bet of 88,000 on the river, making Gelonezi think before laying his hand down.

Small Ball Poker Late Into the Night

Level 10 : Blinds 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

As the final level of the night is winding down, the action has slowed with players hoping to find a bag for Day 2. Pablo Brito Silva opened to 10,000 in the cutoff and was called by Renan Bruschi on the button and Leo Rizzo in the big blind.

The flop came K?4?3? and the action checked around to the 10? on the turn. Rizzo flicked in a min-bet of 5,000 and both Brito Silva and Bruschi called. The river was the 6? and all three players checked again.

Rizzo showed J?6? for a rivered pair of sixes but Bruschi held 10?9? for a pair of tens to drag the pot.

Mota Enforces the "Rabbit Hunt"

Level 10 : Blinds 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Rafael Mota
Rafael Mota

Diego Ventura opened to 10,000 in middle position and Mateus Carrion just called on his left. Rafael Mota three-bet to 38,000 on the button and the action folded around to Carrion who called.

The dealer fanned the flop of K?Q?9? and Carrion checked to Mota who continued with a large size of 58,000. Carrion check-raised all in, putting Mota to the test for the last of his 240,000 chips. Mota opted to fold but wanted to use his "rabbit-hunting" card.

Carrion showed K?Q? for two pair while the A? and 6? would have completed the board. Mota looked skyward afterward, potentially getting lucky on the runout.
