Karol Bogusz Bags Lead in Day 1e of Estrellas Main Event

Level 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Karol Bogusz
Karol Bogusz

The fifth of eight starting flights has concluded in the PokerStars Estrellas Poker Tour (ESPT) Main Event and, as expected, it was the biggest yet. By the time late registration closed, 1,755 players had joined Day 1e — bringing the total number of entrants up to 3,539 (so far) for the kickoff event of the 2024 PokerStars European Poker Tour.

Following 17 levels of play, Karol Bogusz emerged as the chip leader of the remaining 262 players after bagging up 835,000 in chips, which is good for the third spot overall through five starting flights. In a distant second is Raoul Kanme, who ended with 683,000, and rounding out the top three is Brazilian pro Nicolas Coppini with 660,000.

Day 1e Action

There were no lack of notables among the sea of players that filled up two separate tournament rooms as play got underway, including PokerStars ambassadors Benjamin Spragg and Julien Brecard.

While Brecard got off to a hot start, Spragg was unable to build much momentum and ultimately busted after running ace-king into Cyril Beudou's pocket kings shortly after dinner break. Brecard, on the other hand, was fortunate enough to add to his stack and ending up bagging 204,000.

Defending champion Lucien Cohen joined the field about half way through the day and managed to double his stack, but ultimately fell late in the day after getting his set cracked in a large pot.

Tony Ren Lin
Tony Ren Lin

The always amicable Ren Lin joined the fray just before late-registration ended and he quickly went to work by doubling through Mark Roovers with ace-king. Lin's active and unpredictable style saw him go from over 300,000 all the way down to just 18,000 as the money bubble neared. At that point, Lin began shoving preflop with a variety of less-than-stellar hands to great success and quickly grew his chip stack. Lin even managed to double up through Daniel Rezaei on the last hand of the day to vault his stack to 460,000 — more than double the average.

The money bubble burst, ending play for the day, after Uri Gilboa and Ezio Ottaviani were eliminated on different tables on the stone bubble. Gilboa ended up losing a race with pocket threes, while Ottaviani had his queens cracked by the jack-nine of Nicolas Coppini. The exact amount of a min-cash will be calculated after all starting flights have been completed.

Some other players who managed to a bag include Ami Barer (494,000), Wim Verhaegen (244,000), Alex Keating (142,000) and Jari Mahonen (114,000). They will be joined by notables from other flights who have already secured a spot into Day 2, including Marle Spragg (488,000), Jesse Lonis (434,000), Barny Boatman (300,000), Shiina Okamoto (249,000), Robin Ylitalo (200,000), and Maria Konnikova (75,000) to name a few.

All players who have yet to secure a Day-2 berth still have two starting flights left. The penultimate flight, Day 1g, is scheduled to begin on Thursday, August 29 at 11 a.m. local time. The eighth and final flight will take place on the same day at 5 p.m. and will feature a turbo-like schedule with 20-minute levels.

Be sure to stick with PokerNews as we continue to bring you all the action leading to the next Estrellas Poker Tour Main Event champion here at Casino Barcelona!

Jacks Hold for Jimenez to Double Near Bubble

Level 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Pablo Jimenez
Pablo Jimenez

Beltran Garcia opened 124,000 in early position, leaving just 20,000 behind, and Pablo Jimenez called off his 98,000 next to act. The action folded to David Santana who went into the tank for several minutes. Eventually, the clock was called and he was given 30 seconds to act. After a few more seconds, he tossed his cards into the muck.

Pablo Jimenez: J?J? All in
Beltran Garcia: 10?10?

Jimenez was in great shape and the Q?7?3?5?2? runout missed both players for his pocket jacks to hold.

Queens vs Queens vs Aces; Noran Gets Away

Level 16 : Blinds 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Thomas Haverstad
Thomas Haverstad

Thomas Haverstad opened 11,000 under the gun and Argyrios Mitakidis shoved 68,000 from a couple of spots to his left. Seeiar Noran was in the small blind and cold called before Haverstad put him to the test for all of his chips. After a tanking for sometime, Noran mucked his Q?Q? face-up.

Argyrios Mitakidis: Q?Q? All in
Thomas Haverstad: A?A?

It was bad news for Mitakidis as he saw there were no queens left in the deck. The A?K?5? flop improved Haverstad to top set, leaving Mitakidis needing runner-runner. The 3? sealed his fate as he stood up from the table and the 5? river was just a formality.

Nicholas Palma
Nicholas Palma

The board showed 4?8?8?Q? with Nick Palma betting 12,500 from the hijack. Michele D'onofrio called from the small blind.

D'onofrio checked when the 10? came on the river. Palma then announced all in for 39,500 and D'onofrio went deep into the tank. While thinking, D'onoforio tried talking to Palma, but Palma remained quiet. Eventually, D'onofrio flicked in the call.

Palma turned over 7?6? for just seven-high. D'onofrio showed a flush with K?7? and sent Palma to the rail.

Kovac Moment as Van Leeuwen Folds a Set, Burger Folds Kings

Level 14 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Fikret Kovac
Fikret Kovac

In a three-way pot on a board of J?8?Q?, Andreas Burger bet 11,300 and Willem van Leeuwen called before Fikret Kovac raised to 70,000.

Burger went deep in the tank and eventually folded in frustration as Van Leeuwen called. Kovac then quickly moved all in for around 135,000 and Van Leeuwen groaned before folding 8?8? face-up for a set of eights.

Burger then revealed he folded kings and Kovac showed the 10? before claiming he had 10?9? for the nut straight.

"Good fold," someone said to Van Leeuwen.

"What can he have?" Van Leeuwen replied.

Mahonen's Two Pair Sends Out Karakus

Jari Mahonen
Jari Mahonen

Three players saw the K?9?8? flop and Jari Mahonen led for 5,000 into the pot of about 12,000 from the small blind. Harun Karakus was in the big blind and jammed for about 37,000, forcing Rehman Kassam to quickly fold and Mahonen snap-called.

Harun Karakus: K?5? All in
Jari Mahonen: 9?8?

Mahonen flopped bottom two pair against Karakus’s top pair and the A? turn and Q? river meant Karakus was headed to the exit.

Tampin Sends Glaser and Talbot Out in Double KO

Level 13 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante

Benny Glaser shoved for his last 9,500 from early position and David Tampin called from directly behind. Kamal Sefrioui also called from the hijack and Parker Talbot shoved for 24,000 from the small blind.

Tampin then back-raised all in for more and Sefrioui let his hand go.

Benny Glaser: 10?7?All in
Parker Talbot: J?10?All in
David Tampin: Q?Q?

The A?5?J?7?6? runout kept Tampin best with his ladies and both Glaser and Talbot were eliminated.

Talbot Scores a Double

Level 12 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Parker Talbot
Parker Talbot

Jiaze Li opened to 4,000 from middle position and Kamal Sefrioui three-bet to 11,000 from the cutoff. Parker Talbot announced he was all in for 20,500 total from the big blind, which got a fold from Li and a reluctant call from Sefrioui to put Talbot at risk.

Parker Talbot: A?K?All in
Kamal Sefrioui: 9?7?

"You don't like that guy or what!?" a surprised Talbot asked upon seeing Sefrioui's hand.

The dealer fanned out a 7?A?4? flop, which got a groan from Talbot, who didn't immediately notice an ace was also on the flop.

The A? turn and K? river needlessly upgraded Talbot to a full house and he doubled his stack.
