Marian Virlanuta Tops Flight, Bagging Over One Million Chips

Level 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Marian Virlanuta

The PokerStars European Poker Tour Cyprus, running at the luxurious Merit Royal Diamond Hotel Casino & Spa, continued today with Day 1c of the $1,100 Eureka Main Event. The flight attracted 716 entries and, after a hectic bubble that saw two players bust, 106 players made it through to Day 2.

Marian Virlanuta of Romania topped the flight with a staggering chip lead of 1,156,000, the only player so far to bag over one million chips. Virlanuta has several five figure scores under his belt already and is now well on track for his biggest ever cash, if he can run well enough and utilize his chip advantage.

Behind him, finishing Day 1c in second place, was Roman Korenev of Russia, who bagged 692,000. Korenev has over $2.5 million in live winnings, according to Hendon Mob, his greatest result earning him a WSOP bracelet.

Omer Cubukcu rounds out the top three as the only other player in the flight to bag over 600,000.

There were plenty of familiar faces in the field and among those to find a bag were Ana Marquez (332,000), Pablo Silva (319,000), Julien Sitbon (298,000), as well as PokerStars Team Pro players Sebastian Huber (155,000) and Benjamin Spragg (116,000).

Notables who weren't fortunate enough to make Day 2 include 2023 EPT Barcelona Main Event winner Simon Wiciak, 2023 EPT Cypus Eureka Main Event winner Ankit Ahuja, and the winner of the inaugural EPT Cyprus Main Event, Gilles Simon, as well as PS Team Pro players Marle Spragg and Felix Schneiders.

The flight was the busiest so far by a long shot, the tournament floor brimming with hopefuls from the get-go. The field continued to grow right up until late registration closed, at which point there was only one way it could go - hundreds of bustouts followed over the next few hours until the bubble arrived in sharp fashion.

On the second hand of official bubble play, five tables were paused for all in and calls. Two players doubled up, one hand resulted in a split, while Kiletto and Pamukcu both busted on the bubble to bring Day 1c to a close.

Players who bagged for Day 2 are already in the money, although prize pools and payouts won't be confirmed until all starting flights are complete.

Anyone who didn't manage to find the bag still has two starting flights left if they want to take a shot. Day 1e begins on Friday 11th at 11 a.m., while the turbo flight Day 1f runs from 5 p.m. local time.

Day 2 will take place on Saturday, October 12 at noon.

Stay tuned to PokerNews as live reporters bring updates straight from the tournament floor for the remaining starting flights and the rest of the tournament all the way down to a winner.

Gilles Simon

Action folded around to Gilles Simon, who pushed all in from the small blind for around 40,000. Ceyhun Altundag called in the small blind with the bigger stack and the cards were turned.

Gilles Simon: A?8? All in
Ceyhun Altundag: Q?10?

The board ran out 2?4?K?Q?J? and Altundag paired his queen on the turn to pull ahead. He held and Simon, who won the inaugural EPT Cyprus Main Event last year, was eliminated from the flight.

Level 15 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Marle Spragg
Marle Spragg

Three way on a J?7?9? flop with a large pot already in the middle, Kevin Hasler checked from middle position to Tian Hao Zheng, who bet 40,000 in the hijack. Marle Spragg announced she was all in for more from the cutoff, which got a fold from Hasler and a quick call from Zheng.

Marle Spragg: K?K?All in
Tian Hao Zheng: 9?7?

Spragg would need some help against Zheng's two pair, but the Q? turn and 6? river bricked out and Spragg was eliminated.

Zamani Leaves the Room After Doubling Up Simion

Level 12 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Martin Zamani
Martin Zamani

On a flop of 10?4?6?, the action went bet, raise, shove, and call between Andrei Simion and Martin Zamani with the former at risk for his stack of around 65,000.

Andrei Simion: Q?Q? All in
Martin Zamani: 8?4?

Zamani had flopped a pair plus a flush draw and had a plethora of outs to scoop the pot. However, none of those outs appeared as the K? turn and 5? river kept Simion's overpair in the lead, which earned him a double-up.

Despite having around 40,000 chips in his stack, Zamani bolted straight out of his seat with his bag over his shoulder, and headed towards the exit. Perhaps to let off some steam?

Kaufmann Survives on the River

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
David Kaufmann
David Kaufmann

David Kaufmann shipped his stack of 17,000 into the middle from middle position and Roman Gadzhiev called from the cutoff. Roman Nuraev then shoved from the button for his monster stack of around 160,000, and Gadzhiev folded with around 110,000 behind.

David Kaufmann: A?Q? All in
Roman Nuraev: A?K?

Kaufmann was in danger of heading to the rail and moved a step closer to elimination on the 9?4?A? flop. The J? on the turn was close, but not close enough for Kaufmann, who had one last shot at survival. Luckily for Kaufmann, the Q? dropped on the river just as he was standing up getting ready to leave, which earned him a triple-up.

Franchi Flops Straight to Bust Two Players

Level 10 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Malcolm Franchi
Malcolm Franchi

Vasiliy Shvarev was all in from early position with a short stack of just 7,000. He was called by Baris Cinitas on the button and Malcolm Franchi in the big blind.

The flop came Q?8?J? and Franchi checked. Cinitas bet 2,500 and Franchi check-raised to 9,000. Cinitas responded by moving all in and Franchi called with the bigger stack.

Cinitas had A?A? for a pair of aces and Franchi flipped over 10?9? for a flopped straight.

Shverev's hand was quickly mucked as the turn came the 6? and river the 8?. He left the table, joined by Cinitas as Franchi scooped in a significant pot to bring his stack to around the 200,000 mark.

Wiciak Nearly Doubles Through Dimitrov

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Simon Wiciak
Simon Wiciak

Simon Wiciak and Stefan Dimitrov were heads up on a 10?6?2? flop. Wiciak checked from the big blind and Dimitrov bet 1,800 on the button. Wiciak then check-raised to 6,000 and Dimitrov called.

Wiciak opted to check on the 7? turn and Dimitrov seized the initiative with a 4,500 bet. Wiciak again check-raised, this time to 12,000, and Dimitrov called after a bit of thought.

The 10? completed the board and Wiciak fired 19,400 into the middle, leaving himself just 1,000 behind. Dimitrov decided to look Wiciak up and he tabled 10?6? for a full house.

Dimitrov couldn't beat it and mucked — awarding Wiciak the near double up.

Hauks Loses a Flip to Peeks

Level 7 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Edgars Hauks
Edgars Hauks

Edgars Hauks doubled up earlier with aces, but his stack has been on a bit of a downtrend since then and he dusted them all off in the last hand.

Hauks had around 30,000 and got them all into the middle with Roeland Peeks looking to score the knockout.

Edgars Hauks: Q?Q? All in
Roeland Peeks: A?K?

It was a classic flip and Peeks took the advantage on the K?10?5? flop as he paired his king. The 9? turn did bring around some chop possibilities as a spade on the river would give both players a flush. Instead, the 4? rolled off, which meant Hauks was eliminated.

Hauks Doubles With Aces

Level 6 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Edgars Hauks
Edgars Hauks

Bakhos Joumaa made it 1,300 from under the gun and Edgars Hauks three-bet to 3,000 from the button before Roeland Peeks four-bet to 7,000 out of the small blind. Joumaa called, then Hauks shoved for 25,000. Peeks let it go, and Joumaa made the call.

Edgars Hauks: A?A? All in
Bakhos Joumaa: K?J?

Hauks found a dream flop of 5?6?J? as he now also had a flush draw, then left Joumaa drawing dead as he hit his flush on the Q? turn. A 7? on the river put a flush on board, but Hauks' bigger flush won him the pot and doubled him up.

Duta Falls as Kacar Makes Quads

Level 5 : Blinds 200/500, 500 ante
Florian Duta
Florian Duta

Florian Duta made it 1,200 from early position and Vyacheslav Shin called before Mehmet Kacar made it 3,300 from the cutoff. Konstantin Voronin cold-called from the small blind before Duta bumped it up to 12,000. Shin folded, then Kacar shoved for 53,300. Voronin quickly announced a fold and after around a minute of deliberation, Duta called.

Florian Duta: Q?Q? All in
Mehmet Kacar: A?A?

Duta needed to find some Lady Luck to survive but didn't get any help on the 6?5?5? flop, and was left drawing dead on the A? turn as Kacar improved to a full house. Kacar then improved to quads on the A? river just for good measure, and Duta vacated his seat.
