"It's Been That Kind of a Day"

For as great a day as Chris Moneymaker had yesterday, today his day has been nothing but frustration. After an early position player opened for 3,700, Moneymaker called. The player immediately to his left then went all in for 32,300, clearing all remaining players out of the hand back to the original raiser. He called, and then Moneymaker called as well.

With more than 100,000 in the main pot, Moneymaker and the early-position player were betting into the side pot on a flop of {2-Spades} {3-Diamonds} {k-Diamonds}. The early-position player checked, inducing a feeler bet of 20,000 from Moneymaker. That player must have sensed weakness; he check-raised to 50,000, drawing a disgusted snap muck from Moneymaker, who showed {J-Hearts} {J-Clubs}.

With the side pot decided, it was time for the reveal for the main pot. The all in player opened {10-Clubs} {10-Spades}; amazingly he was ahead against the early-position player's unimproved {A-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}!

"Oh my god," moaned Moneymaker. He looked like he had been punched in the gut until the dealer peeled off the {Q-Clubs} on the turn. "Thank goodness," he said. It didn't completely take the sting out of losing 50,000 chips, but it vindicated Moneymaker's fold.

"It's been that kind of a day," he added, as we eyeballed his stack. The total now is roughly 115,000.
