Perky Takes Esfandiari for $1,000
"Perky, let's auction for $1,000 on how long she gets here with the food," Antonio Esfandiari yelled over to the table behind him where Bill Perkins was seated.
Perkins and Esfandiari had ordered food together and it was supposed to be on the way, so Esfandiari wanted to bet $1,000 on the time in which the food would arrive. He first asked Perkins, who had ordered the food, what sort of knowledge he had that would give him an advantage. Perkins showed Esfandiari his phone with the string of text messages about the delivery to make things fair for everyone.
Esfandiari started the bidding at two minutes. Perkins quickly bumped that up to seven minutes, and Esfandiari immediately bought.
"Buy," he said emphatically.
"You're taking the under?" asked Perkins.
"Yes," responded Esfandiari.
The time was 3:32 p.m. and Esfandiari needed the food to arrive within the next seven minutes to win. But with one minute to go, he began to really get worried about his chances, and they certainly did not look good.
"Perky, can I buy out?" Esfandiari asked.
"I think I'll let you save a dollar," responded Perkins.
"A dollar!" Esfandiari yelled. "You see what he does to me? How he tortures me? A dollar! She said she got the shakes and that she was on her way. How long does it take?"
"I'm on my second bullet, but at least I can brag about how it only cost me $99,000 instead of $100,000," laughed Perkins.
The food did not show up within the seven-minute window, and Perkins won the $1,000 from Esfandiari.
