Yu Holds Commanding Lead With 6 Left in 2023 Poker Dream Short Deck Super High Roller

Level 13 : Blinds 0/0, 20,000 ante
Winfred Yu
Winfred Yu

The most expensive tournament of the 2023 Poker Dream Manila stop at the Newport World Resorts Integrated Resort in Metro Manila, right across the city's international airport has reached the money stages. Out of a 41-entry strong field in the "White Horse Cup" Short Deck Super High Roller Ante-Only, only six players remain with Winfred Yu holds a commanding lead over the other five contenders.

After a late surge during the final stages, Yu advanced with 4,610,000 and has two times as many chips as fellow Hong Kong poker pro Danny Tang (2,300,000). All other four finalists are hailing from Malaysia, which is no surprise as the action-paced Short Deck variant has been very popular among the high-stakes players there.

Jun Wah Yap sits in third place with 1,860,000 followed by Ming Hong Teoh (1,440,000) and Triton Poker co-founder Paul Phua (1,315,000), while Chen Ming Kong (775,000) has just shy of 20 antes at his disposal. The six finalists all ponied up the buy-in of PHP 1,300,000 ($25,321) and are guaranteed at least PHP3,850,000 ($74,989) for their efforts.

Yu's rise towards the top of the leaderboard commenced on the final two tables when he scooped numerous bigger pots to pull ahead of the pack. For second-placed Tang, it was a roller coaster affair. He was among the bigger stacks for most of the day to suffer a late setback when Paul Phua rivered a straight for the double on the unofficial final table bubble. However, Tang sent Eng Siang Ewe to the rail on the bubble itself and jumped into second place.

Notable casualties throughout an action-packed Day 1 included known high-stakes tournament regulars such as Hing Yaung Chow, Wai Kin Yong, Triton Poker co-founder Richard Yong, Wai Kiat Lee, and Wei Hsiang Yeu.

Short Deck specialist Rene van Krevelen was also in the mix and aimed to follow up on his success in the PHP280,000 Short Deck High Roller earlier in the day. However, he lost two big pots to Teoh and bowed out on the final three tables.

The six-handed final showdown is scheduled to recommence at 1pm local time with 19:11 minutes left in level 13, which features an ante of 20,000 and a button double ante of 40,000. All action with cards-up coverage and commentary can be found on the Poker Dream Facebook page on a security delay of 30 minutes and the PokerNews live updates will be published accordingly.

Level 13 : Blinds 0/0, 20,000 ante
Eng Siang Ewe
Eng Siang Ewe

With the button approaching, Eng Siang Ewe open-jammed and was looked up only by Danny Tang from the very next seat.

Eng Siang Ewe: 9?8?
Danny Tang: A?K?

The K?Q?J? flop gave Ewe a gutshot and flush draw while Tang had top pair and the broadway draw. Nothing changed with the 6? turn and 7? river as Ewe was eliminated on the bubble to conclude Day 1. Full counts and a recap of today's action are to follow.

Chow Picks Wrong Time to Jam

Level 11 : Blinds 0/0, 12,000 ante
Hing Yaung Chow
Hing Yaung Chow

In a three-way limped pot to the Q?10?6? flop, no betting action took place. It was then Danny Tang who bet the J? turn for 50,000 in the hijack. Chen Ming Kong called in the cutoff and Hing Yaung Chow jammed for around 360,000 total.

Tang folded and Kong snap-called. "Do you have it?" Chow may have asked in their native language as Kong instantly nodded and flashed his A?7? for the nut flush.

"Drawing dead," Chow giggled as he exposed the J?6? and already pushed over his stack even before the K? river officially ended his tournament.

Yong The Next to Fall as Kong Earns a Knockout

Level 10 : Blinds 0/0, 10,000 ante
Wai Kin Yong
Wai Kin Yong

Only nine players remain in contention with more than two full levels to be played for tonight. The top six spots are paid and Wai Kin Yong doesn't have a shot at prize money anymore after he bowed out against Chen Ming Kong.

Short-stacked with some ten antes, Yong jammed and Kong called with the superior pocket pair.

Wai Kin Yong: 9?9?
Chen Ming Kong: Q?Q?

The A?10?8? flop and 8? turn kept the bigger-stacked Kong ahead, the J? river didn't change that either.

Winfred Yu limped in and then reluctantly called the all-in of Wai Kiat Lee for what appeared to be 261,000 total.

Winfred Yu: A?J?

The ace of Yu was ahead and that remained to be the case throughout the entire 10?8?8?6?6? runout.

Rene van Krevelen
Rene van Krevelen

Wai Kiat Lee and Chen Ming Kong limped in. Rene van Krevelen eyeballed both of their stack sizes and then pushed all-in for around 600,000. Chip leader Ming Hong Teoh went all-in over the top and both limpers folded.

Rene van Krevelen: A?Q?
Ming Hong Teoh: A?K?

Van Krevelen took the lead until the J?9?8?10? turn but the Q? on the river gave Teoh broadway for the knockout.

Triple Ups for Phua and Loon

Level 8 : Blinds 0/0, 6,000 ante

Lun Loon open-jammed for 306,000 and then saw Wei Hsiang Yeu also move all-in. Paul Phua contemplated to make it a three-way all-in from the hijack, which he indeed did after a few seconds. Both players behind folded and the cards were revealed.

Paul Phua 10?8?
Lun Loon: A?Q?
Wei Hsiang Yeu: A?Q?

Yong had put both players on ace-king but was equally happy to see identical hands, too. The A?9?6? flop gave Yong a gutshot straight flush draw, which didn't get there on the 6? turn just yet. However, the 7? river completed the straight and he tripled for 287,000.

Loon was left very short and tripled in the very next hand versus Yeu and Jun Wah Yap.

Lun Loon: 6?6?
Wei Hsiang Yeu: K?10?
Jun Wah Yap: Q?Q?

The best hand ended up worst on the J?9?7?K?6? board as Loon tripled with a two-outer and Yeu doubled for 118,000 against Yap.

Paul Teoh and William Teoh get it in after the flop with the latter on the button and the board reading J?10?8?,

Paul Teoh: 8?8?
William Teoh: J?10?

The 10? turn reduced the outs of Paul Teoh to one and instead, it was William Teoh who improved to quads on the 10? river.

Chow and Van Krevelen Add Chips

Level 6 : Blinds 0/0, 4,000 ante
Rene van Krevelen

Ivan Ermin open-jammed a shorter stack with the 9?8? and was looked up by Rene van Krevelen with the A?10?.

The A?A?10? flop left Ermin drawing dead as the J? turn and 8? river were no longer significant.

Moments later, another short stack got it in with the J?9? and Hing Yaung Chow happily called with the A?10?. The suited ace made broadway on the A?J?7?Q?K? runout as yet another bullet had to be redeemed.

Ermin Eliminated; Yu Scoops Large Pot to Take Lead

Level 5 : Blinds 0/0, 3,000 ante
Winfred Yu
Winfred Yu

Soon after redeeming the third and final bullet, Ivan Ermin was all-in once more. This time, two players went to war as Winfred Yu and Wei Hsiang Yeu also got in their bigger stacks to create a pot of nearly seven figures.

Ivan Ermin: A?K?
Winfred Yu: J?J?
Wei Hsiang Yeu: K?K?

The J?9?7? flop improved Yu to a set and the 9? turn made that a full house. Ermin was alive with his flush draw while Yeu had a single out to avoid a major blow. Nothing changed with the 9? river and Yu doubled through Yeu for 397,000 in the biggest pot of the tournament so far.

"All limped and there was a short stack," Yu mentioned when referring to what had just happened.
