Congratulations to RGPS Council Bluffs Main Event Winner Derrick Contreras ($38,539)

After winning the PLO preliminary event at the RunGood Poker Series (RGPS) for a championship ring and $4,192 earlier in the week, Derrick Contreras took down the $575 Main Event at the Horseshoe Council Bluffs on Sunday. After besting a field of 328 players, Contreras will take home the championship ring and $38,539 in prize money.

The field was stacked with players of high caliber and stellar poker resumes, including Ryan Phan, Daniel Lowery, Blair Hinkle, Ray Henson, defending champion Nick Burris, Travis Speck, Jesse McVicker, and Mark Fink. Nick Burris won the RGPS Main Event at this venue in February, but had to settle for 24th place ($1,432). Mark Fink made a deeper run, but fell short of a final table when he exited in 12th place ($2,881).

Day 2 started with 72 players still in contention for the RGPS championship ring. The pace of play started off slow, with the bubble being reached after the first break. The final table itself wasn't reached until shortly before the scheduled dinner break, after nearly seven hours of play.

Contreras came to the final table of ten players third in chips, but led the field from nine players onward, knocking out four of his opponents personally. The first of those was Joe Walters in seventh place ($5,669). Contreras shoved with king high from the small blind and Walters called with ace high from the big. Contreras caught a king-high straight to send Walters to the rail.

Contreras then knocked out Michael Childers (4th Place - $12,784) with pocket aces versus Childers' ace-king, followed by Jesse McVicker (3rd Place - $17,307)--again with pocket aces.

The heads up battle was short--two hands in all. In the final hand of the tournament, Contreras caught a freeroll when his suited king-queen of spades flopped a flush draw against Kris Burchfield's king-queen offsuit. The flush came in on the turn, making Contreras the main event champion!

"I'm really good at getting it in bad and getting lucky," Contreras said after the event.

Kris Burchfield Eliminated in 2nd Place ($23,829)

Kris Burchfield
Kris Burchfield

Kris Burchfield opened the pot for 85,000. Derrick Contreras moved all-in and Burchfield called to put himself at risk.

Kris Burchfield: {k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Derrick Contreras: {k-Spades}{q-Spades}

More often than not, this matchup will result in a chop, but Contreras binked the freeroll when the flop came {a-Spades}{9-Spades}{9-Clubs}.

The {5-Spades} on the turn ended the suspense with the {7-Clubs} river officially bringing an end to the tournament.

Burchfield will take home $23,829 for his second-place finish in the RGPS Council Bluffs Main Event.

Jesse McVicker Eliminated in 3rd Place ($17,307)

Jesse McVicker
Jesse McVicker

Derrick Contreras opened from the small blind to 100,000 and Jesse McVicker defended his big blind. The flop came {5-Spades}{5-Clubs}{2-Spades}.

McVicker checked and Contreras continued for 75,000. McVicker instantly moved all-in for around 980,000 and Contreras snap-called.

Jesse McVicker: {4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Derrick Contreras: {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}

McVicker would need a deuce or running cards to come from behind, but no help arrived when the board ran out {j-Spades}{4-Clubs}.

For his performance in the main event, McVicker will take home $17,307.

McVicker Doubles Through Burchfield

Level 24 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Jesse McVicker

After a pause in the action while the players discussed a chop, no agreement was reached and we're back into action.

Kris Burchfield raised to 85 from the button and Jesse McVicker defended his big blind. The flop came {q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{10-Clubs}.

McVicker checked and Burchfield continued for 80,000. McVicker quickly check-raised all-in and Burchfield called immediately.

Kris Burchfield: {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Jesse McVicker: {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}

Burchfield is ahead at the moment, but McVicker's combo draw makes this a coinflip.

The {8-Clubs} hits the turn, giving McVicker even more outs, one of which arrives with the {8-Diamonds} on the river.

Michael Childers Eliminated in 4th Place ($12,784)

Miike Childers
Miike Childers

Jesse McVicker opened the pot for 90,000. Derrick Contreras three-bet to 270,000 from the small blind, and Michael Childers moved all-in from the big blind.

McVicker got out of the way and Contreras snap-called.

Derrick Contreras: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Michael Childers: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

It's domination of the worst kind for Childers, but a sliver of hope comes when the flop falls {j-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{9-Clubs}.

"Queen," Contreras tells the dealer, but the turn brings the {6-Clubs}.

"Queen," he says again as the {7-Spades} hits the river.

Childers stood up and accepted handshakes and congratulations from around the table and the rail. For his fourth-place finish, Childers will take home a cash prize of $12,784.
