Big Pot for the Reigning MSPT Player of the Year

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Ian Demrow opened for 14,000 and was met by a three-bet to 28,500 by MSPT Season 4 Player of the Year Pat Steele. Demrow made the call and then checked the {5-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{j-Clubs} flop. Steele bet 34,000, Demrow check-raised to 84,000, and Steele moved all in. Demrow called off his stack and discovered the bad news.

Demrow: {10-Clubs}{a-Clubs}
Steele: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

Demrow had flopped middle pair with top kicker, but it was no good as Steele held an overpair. Neither the {3-Spades} turn nor {7-Diamonds} river changed a thing, and Steele was pushed the large pot while Demrow was eliminated from the tournament.

Brooks Busts Wilke

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Travis Lauson opened with a standard raise only to have Brian Wilke three-bet all in for 20,500 from the button. Todd Brooks made the call from the big blind, Lauson came along, and then both active players checked it down as the board ran out {k-Hearts}{4-Spades}{k-Spades}{2-Clubs}{5-Hearts}.

Lauson tabled the {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}, but it was no good as Brooks held two pair with his {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}. Wilke simply mucked his cards and then made a beeline toward the exit.

Kroon Silenced

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Mark Kroon
Mark Kroon

Mark "P0ker H0" Kroon stopped by our desk to inform us that he had just been eliminated from the tournament.

As he told it, David Brown opened for 8,000 from the button and Kroon, who had grown short, shoved all in from the small blind holding {a-}{5-}. The player in the big blind woke up with {a-}{k-}, moved all in over the top, and Brown folded. The board ran out clean, and that was all she wrote for Kroon, who indicated that he'll be playing the MSPT Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells later this month.

Spade, Baby!

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Jim Boone opened for 7,500 and received a call from a short-stacked Artic Montini. Ross Obbink then three-bet to 18,500, both his opponents called, and three players saw a flop of {3-Spades}{10-Spades}{6-Hearts}. Boone checked, Montini moved all in for his last 4,500, and Obbink raised to 10,000. Boone got out of the way and the cards were turned up.

Montini: {6-Spades}{9-Spades}
Obbink: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}

"Spade, baby," Montini called. Indeed, he held a spade flush draw to go along with his pair of sixes. Meanwhile, Obbink was ahead with pocket eights. The {K-Hearts} turn wasn't what Montini asked for, and neither was the {7-Diamonds} river. Obbink's eights held and he sent Montini to the rail short of the money.

Basebaldy Strikes Out

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Eric Baldwin
Eric Baldwin

World Series of Poker bracelet winner Eric "basebaldy" Baldwin was visiting family in his home state of Wisconsin when he decided to play in the MSPT Potawatomi. He punched his ticket to Day 2 on Day 1a, albeit with a short stack.

Early on in Level 15, Baldwin opened for 6,000 from early position only to have Madison's Steve Verrett three-bet to 16,000. Action folded back to Baldwin, and he thought for a bit before moving all in for roughly 50,000. Verrett called and the cards were turned up.

Baldwin: {10-}{10-}
Verrett: {q-}{q-}

Baldwin was in bad shape, and it got even worse when the {q-}{9-}{6-} flop delivered Verrett top set. The {5-} turn left Baldwin drawing dead, and after a {9-} was put out on the river, he took his leave from the tournament.
