9 | Alexandru Baron | Canada | $10,244 | $66,243 | $76,487 |
There was an early double-up for Patrick Brooks to kickstart the WPT500 Knockout final table, with his pocket pair holding against Alexandru Baron who became the first elimination in ninth place.
Arseniy Malinov had held the overnight chip lead, but fell back somewhat after doubling up Ilia Plaxin. However he stormed back to become the first player over 300 million in chips, and would boost his chip lead further with the elimination of Alexandros Kolonias in eighth.
Viacheslav Zaslavski would soon take over the chip lead after winning a pot versus Malinov and would move further ahead after eliminating Brooks and Yulian Bogdanov shortly after the first break of the day.
The short stack was Plaxin, who was some way adrift of the other players. Malinov sent him to the rail in fifth place and the four remaining players dug in for a deep stack battle. Stacks would level out, albeit with Zaslavski still in the lead, but momentum would swing the way of Alexandros Theologis after he rivered a straight against the two pair of Zaslavski to move into the lead for the first time.
Start-of-day chip leader Malinov would fall in a flip versus Theologis, who quickly went about extending his chip advantage. Daniel Colpoys had done expertly well to ladder from start-of-day short stack, but would be eliminated in third place as Theologis took a more than 4:1 chip lead into heads-up.
The battle between Theologis and Zaslavski was a one-sided affair, with Zaslavski never able to claw back any ground on his opponent. Eventually, the Russian called an all in for what was at the time his las four big blinds and was dominated. He received no help, and Theologis was crowned the champion.
