Vidmer vs. Truesdell

Justin Truesdell opened for 120,000 from the button and Anthony Vidmer defended from the big blind, bringing about a flop of {10-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{3-Spades}. Both players checked and then Vidmer fired out 120,000 on the {4-Spades} turn. Not to be outdone, Truesdell raised to 300,000, Vidmer called and the {6-Clubs} peeled off on the river.

Once again both players checked and Vidmer rolled over {A-Clubs}{J-Spades}. Truesdell double checked his cards and then sent them to the muck.

Straight Over Straight

With around 550,000 in the pot and a board reading {5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}, Justin Truesdell checked from the small blind and Andrew Nguyen bet 285,000 from te big. Truesdell made a quick call and watched as Nguyen confidently turned over {A-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} for a wheel.

"Oh, I have a straight," Truesdell said and revealed {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for an eight-high straight. Nguyen seemed a bit surprised that his opponent had him beat.

"Wow, that could have been a big pot," Lowery pointed out.

Lowery Finds Value

Justin Truesdell opened for 105,000 from the cutoff and Daniel Lowery looked him up from the big blind. The latter proceeded to check-call a bet of 150,000 before both players checked the {A-Clubs} turn. When the {9-Spades} appeared on the river, Lowery fired out 275,000 and Truesdell snap-called. Lowery confidently rolled over {9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} for two pair and it was good enough to win the pot as Truesdell simply mucked.

Dominic Gabaldon Eliminated in 5th Place ($52,086); Captures Casino Championship

Dominick Gabaldon
Dominick Gabaldon

Dominic Gabaldon opened for 165,000 under the gun and was met with a three-bet to 440,000 by Andrew Nguyen on the button. Both blinds got out of the way and Gabaldon made the call. The {2-Spades}{7-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop saw Gabaldon move all in for around 700,000 and Nguyen snap-call.

Showdown
Nguyen: {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}
Gabaldon: {K-Spades}{10-Spades}

Nguyen was ahead with a pair of jacks but Gabaldon had flopped a flush draw. The crowd was on its feet as the dealer burned and turned the {8-Hearts}, a blank for Gabaldon. That meant he needed either a king or spade on the river, but it was not meant to be as the {5-Diamonds} appeared.

Gabaldon finished in fifth place for $52,086, and combined with his seventh-place finish in Event #4 $355 NLHE for $3,453 and fifth in Event #8 $1,080 NLHE for $14,058, he becomes the Harrah's New Orleans Casino Champ and earns a seat in the National Championship come July. A nice consolation prize, indeed.
