Mayfield Takes Down Event #4; Carli Notches 103rd WSOP Circuit Cash
Once again, we turn to the WSOP's Lukas Willems for a look back at a prelim event. This time it's Event 4 $365 No-Limit Hold’em:
Jason Mayfield has most certainly put in his time on the WSOP Circuit. Between September of 2007 and now, he racked up 26 WSOP-related cashes and four final tables. He finished 8th, 3rd and 2nd, but his most recent final table appearance is the one that will stay with him the longest.
The finale in question took place Monday night at Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa and it was that of Event 4, a $365 No-Limit Hold’em tournament. Mayfield bested the other eight participants in two short hours, earning his largest WSOP cash, his first gold ring and taking the Casino Championship lead in the process.
“When you get so close, you want it more each time,” Mayfield said of his past shortcomings.
He came to the Event 4 final table as the second player to make multiple final table appearances through the first four events at Council Bluffs. David Sutton, the other player to do so, finished 2nd in Event 2 and 8th in Event 3, amassing 55 points and taking the early lead in the Casino Championship.
Mayfield needed a 5th-place finish to tie Sutton and a 4th-place finish or better to take the lead outright, but standing in his way was the man they call Rico, Doug Carli.
Carli is a bit of a legend on the WSOP Circuit, cashing in seemingly every event he plays. Prior to tonight, the now-57-year-old retired stockbroker had recorded an astonishing 102 WSOP-related cashes including 27 final tables and two gold ring championships since January 2005.
Rico added to his legend in Event 4, finishing 8th and earning his 103rd career WSOP-related cash, seven better than Phil Hellmuth’s 96. Needless to say, Mayfield was thankful to see Carli come into the finale short stacked and needing some help.
With Rico’s early exit, Mayfield made short work of the rest of the competition and eventually bested David Yee heads-up earning 50 points and bringing his total to 80, 25 clear of Sutton now in second place.
