Event #1: COVID Charity 1M Gtd

Day 1 Completed

"TheMadQueen" Wins WSOPC Ring Event 1: COVID Charity 1M Gtd for $269,267

Level 45 : 125,000/250,000, 25,000 ante

After almost 13 hours of play, "TheMadQueen" from Canada outlasted a field of 1,595 entries to collect $269,267 and secure the first ring of the 2020 GGPoker WSOP Online Super Circuit.

"TheMadQueen" showed up on the radar after the money bubble burst, and was the first player to crack 500,000 chips. They were also one of only two players with more than a million chips a little later in the tournament, and they consistently figured in the top 10 counts through the end of the tournament. During heads up play, they overcame a significant chip disadvantage to take the prize down over 2nd place finisher "Igutu".

The Day's Action

With the world in an unprecedented situation, it seemed only fitting that the first ring event of the 2020 GGPoker WSOP Online Super Circuit was a charity event aimed at raising money for Covid-19 relief. Event #1: COVID Charity 1M Gtd had an entry fee of $1,111, with $111 of that going directly to the Nevada Community Foundation's Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund. With a total of 1,595 entries, more than $175,000 was raised for the fund which is intended to help get much supplies to first responders and healthcare workers in the line of fire.

In addition to the charity money, the entries also generated a tidy little prize pool that crushed the $1 million guarantee. When the dust settled, the total prize pool was $1,772,045, with $269,267 for the winner. There was a small glitch early in the day as technical problems paused the tournaments for about an hour, but things went smoothly once they resumed.

As registration closed, tennis legend Boris Becker was showing he's just as proficient on the green felt as he was on the green grass. He began building a stack in the final levels of late registration, and was second in chips a couple levels after it closed with 147,712, but that was where he peaked, finally ending his run in 153rd for $2,470.

It was "TheMadQueen"'s day however. While they didn't get through the day without damage, they managed to hold their stack in the top ten for most of the endgame. They were second in chips going into the final table, but had dropped to fifth overall when play was six-handed.

They battled back though, and took over the chip lead again with nearly 6 million after taking "tiredfella" out in fourth place. "Igutu" then got them heads up and jumped back into the lead after busting Finnish player "asonthe river" in third.

Heads up didn't last very long. "Igutu" came into it with the chip lead, but "TheMadQueen" came back with a big pot where their king-eight held against queen-ten to pull almost even. They then took a huge lead with a 4 million chip uncontested pot before finishing it out with an all in preflop hand where their ace-six held against "Igutu"'s king-eight.

Stay tuned here for more coverage from the 2020 GGPoker WSOP Online Super Circuit. PokerNews will be on the virtual floor throughout the series to bring you all the action.
