2013 Main Event winner Ryan “The Beast” Riess is living up to his name and reputation here by grabbing quite a few chips early on. In a hand we just witnessed, however, he showed that it can be just as important to back off in some spots.

Riess was in the big blind and after a raise and a call from middle position players, he put in the calling chips. The flop came down {6-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and Riess led out for 250.

The original raiser folded but the remaining player in Seat 10 didn’t take much time to move all in. Riess asked for a count and found it was 2,175. He then asked the dealer to lean back so he could study his opponent. With the dealer out of the way, Riess gave him a long stare and after some thought, he flipped over the {7-Spades} and mucked his hand.
