Main Event Champions Riess and Merson Eliminated in Succession

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

The action folded around to Florian Duta on the button who raised it up and Ryan Riess shoved all in from the small blind. Duta quickly called off his last 72,500 chips and the cards were tabled.

Florian Duta: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Ryan Riess: {3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}

It was a race situation and Duta took the lead when the flop came {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{2-Hearts}. The turn was the {6-Diamonds} and the river brought the {j-Clubs}. Duta doubled up through Riess, leaving the 2013 Main Event champion with under 6,000 chips. Riess would go on to be eliminated within the next few hands.

At another table, Greg Merson shoved all in for around 40,000 from the cutoff and Arturo Alaniz called from the big blind. Merson tabled {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} but was up against the {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} of Alaniz.

The flop fell {q-Spades}{4-Spades}{2-Spades} and Alaniz spiked a set of queens to take a commanding lead. The {8-Clubs} on the turn gave Merson a straight draw but the {a-Diamonds} on the river bricked. The 2012 Main Event champion quickly followed Riess to the payout desk to collect their winnings.
