Wesley Fei Bags Big on Day 1a of the 2022 WSOP Main Event in His First Ever Tournament

A few minutes before 11 a.m local time, the doors to the Bally’s ballroom swung open, the throng poured in, and it seemed like Christmas morning for every poker player.

The start of the $10,000 Main Event is the biggest day on the poker calendar as defending champion Koray Aldemir did the ceremonial “Shuffle Up and Deal.” Aldemir’s run at a repeat performance will have to wait as he did not enter this flight, but 900 players did take to the felt today on Day 1a to chase their dreams of World Series of Poker glory and the title of world champion.

Leading the way after five two-hour levels is Cedrric Trevino. The man behind the vlog “Poker Traveler” hit a set of kings on the river to crack pocket aces and knock out a player on his way to bagging 317,800.

Right behind him is Wesley Fei. The cryptocurrency investor and Hustler Live cash game regular only started playing poker six months ago. The Main Event is his first-ever tournament. He won a big pot with kings against ace-queen to approach 200,000 chips, finishing the night with 300,000.

“I feel good. First time playing a tournament,” Fei said at the end of the night. “This tournament is almost like a cash game. I’m happy with deep stacks.”

A total of 631 players made it through the day. Ryan Depaulo knocked out two players, one with a set of sixes against pocket kings and the other by rivering a straight with jack-ten to crack a set of nines. The bracelet winner finished the night with 188,800. Others who made it through to Day 2 include past Main Event champions Ryan Riess (139,900), Qui Nguyen (74,000), John Cynn (65,000), and Martin Jacobson (64,300), in addition to Thomas Eychenne (255,800), Andrew Moreno (238,200), Jimmy D’Ambrosio (213,000), two-time “Last Woman Standing” Kelly Minkin (204,700), and Kevin Gerhart (149,900).

One player who is no stranger to Main Event success is Josh Remitio, who rode the strength of his boisterous rail a year ago all the way to a fourth-place finish. Remitio took to the felt today for another run and ended up with 145,500.

“It feels good. I've bricked every tournament so far this series. This just kinda feels like my event though,” Remitio said about being back on the Main Event stage. “Following (last year’s) Main Event I studied a lot more but yeah, pretty much taking the same approach.”

The Main Event dream ended early for others. Reigning Player of the Year Josh Arieh ran into a cooler with a rivered flush against D’Ambrosio’s full house and busted shortly after. Johnnie “Vibes” Moreno, Ana Marquez, $100,000 High Roller champion Aleksejs Ponakovs, and Japanese vlogging superstar Masato Yokosawa also hit the rail on Day 1a.

The players who survived the day will return on July 7 for Day 2ab. Stay tuned to PokerNews as another group of Main Event hopefuls gets their turn on July 4 on Day 1b at 11 a.m.

Lotti, Club GG Qualifier, Sniffs Out the Bluff

Level 5 : 300/600, 600 ante
Romain Lotti
Romain Lotti

There was about 7,000 in on the {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{10-Spades}{4-Diamonds} river when Romain Lotti bet 5,000.

His opponent in the cutoff took some time before raising to 11,000 and Lotti tanked.

After about a minute, Lotti seemed to begrudgingly toss in a call, as if to say, "If you got it, you got it."

The cutoff showed {q-Diamonds}{9-Spades} queen-high and Lotti turned over {j-Spades}{10-Clubs} for jacks and tens, and the winner.

Lotti qualified for this tournament through Club GG. Learn more about ClubGG here

D'Ambrosio Confuses Corbin, But Corbin Takes the Pot

Level 5 : 300/600, 600 ante
Jimmy D'Ambrosio

There was about 17,000 on the {4-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and Jimmy D'Ambrosio bet 8,000. Nate Corbin called.

"You're gonna try to fight for it I see that," said D'Ambrosio.

The turn brought the {8-Spades} and D'Ambrosio started with the talk again.

"Oh I gotta check the s*** out of that," he said.

Corbin checked back.

"Oh no," said D'Ambrosio. "Don't check that."

"You didn't want me to?" said Corbin.

"No I didn't want you to," said D'Ambrosio.

The river was the {j-Clubs} and the action was D'Ambrosio.

"I'm trying to figure out how to get the rest of your chips," he said. "This is gonna be a thin value bet."

He bet 600 and the table laughed at the small sizing.

"You should pile it in," said D'Ambrosio. "Send it, send it."

"Hi mom," Scotty Smith interjected, catching a glance of the PokerNews live reporting team.

Corbin just called the 600 and D'Ambrosio showed {k-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for king-high and a busted flush draw. While Corbin tabled {a-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} ace-high to win the pot.

"I needed you to raise so I could pile it in," said D'Ambrosio.

He still sits among the leaders late in the night, while Smith got his shoutout to his mom back home.

D'Ambrosio Back to Patented Table Talk, Unbeknownst to Opponent

Level 4 : 300/500, 500 ante
Jimmy D'Ambrosio
Jimmy D'Ambrosio

There was about 15,000 on the {4-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{6-Spades}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs} river and Jimmy D'Ambrosio overbet to 18,900. His opponent was in the tank taking his time.

"It's cheaper to believe," said D'Ambrosio. "I know you're baffled."

It turns out that the player had his headphones in and didn't hear a word.

"Oh you didn't hear anything," said D'Ambrosio. "Now I gotta start all over."

His opponent folded and asked for him to show.

"I can't show," he said. "I can't, Ian over here is dying for information."

D'Ambrosio gestured to his neighbor as he dragged another pot to push over 200,000.

A full board was spread on the table and showed {3-Hearts}{9-Spades}{6-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}. Around 35,000 was in the pot and Dmitry Yurasov was out of position from under the gun.

He checked to his sole opponent in the hand, Yuri Dzivielevski in late position. Dzivielevski tossed out two green chips worth 50,000, enough to cover the 35,300 in Yurasov's stack.

Yurasov thought for about two minutes, then decided to fold and live to fight for another pot.

Zawadzki Bests the 'Most Interesting Man in Poker'

Level 4 : 300/500, 500 ante
Mikolaj Zawadzki
Mikolaj Zawadzki

Action was picked up when Chris Richardson raised his action from the small blind and it folded around to Mikolaj Zawadzki in late position.

"Can I see how many chips you are playing with sir? " Zawadzki asked and Richardson then comically placed all his chips on the felt in singles.

"Ok ok I am satisfied, you are most interesting man in poker, I call," Zawadzki responded as he threw out the call.

The flop was {8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{q-Spades} and Richardson bet 6,500 and Zawadzki called.

The turn came the {2-Diamonds} and Zawadzki called a bet of 8,000 from Richardson.

But on the {k-Hearts} river, Richardson checked, to which Zawadzki bet 22,000. This sent Richardson deep into the tank, as he only had around 26,000 left in his stack. After nearly two minutes he picked up two black chips and pretended they were Oreos to reenact a scene from the movie Rounders, either for comic relief or some new strategy no one knew.

"If I fold will you show? " He eventually asked.

"I let you pick one," Zawadzki said with a smile. Richardson just laughed and after another few moments he tossed in his cards face-up, showing {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}. Zawadzki then offered his cards for him to expose one but he refused, much to the dismay of the table.
