At the dinner break on Day 1a of the 2022 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, Josh Arieh was already out thanks to some rough luck, while four previous winners are working on building stacks.

The first session of poker's world championship event kicked off at 11 a.m. PST with the defending champion, Koray Aldemir, announcing "shuffle up and deal." Last year's world champion didn't take his seat to play as he intends to enter the Day 1c flight on Tuesday.

Blinds: 1,400/2,800

After Vanessa ''ContainsNuts'' Kade opened under-the-gun to 5,600 chips, Brian "Chains" Reinert moved all in from the big blind for 36,800 total and Kade called off.

Brian "Chains" Reinert: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Vanessa ''ContainsNuts'' Kade: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

Reinert was in rough shape but caught up with a flopped pair of queens on {j-Spades}{q-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{8-Spades}. The turn and river couldn't help Kade and she doubled Reinert up.

Will the 2022 WSOP Main Event Smash the Attendance Record?

WSOP Money
WSOP Money

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that the tables have been packed at the 2022 World Series of Poker (WSOP), the first year the series has been held at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas. But how will that translate into attendance in the most important event of them all the Main Event?

Last year was a unique WSOP in that the series was held in the fall and only those vaccinated against COVID-19 were permitted to play. Still, the field in the $10,000 buy-in world championship event attracted 6,650 entries, impressive considering the circumstances, but nearly 2,000 fewer than in 2019 (the live WSOP was canceled in 2020).

Outside of the venue switch, things are back to normal this summer. So, we'll compare turnout up to this point at the 2022 WSOP to similar events in 2019 as we attempt to handicap turnout in the upcoming Main Event, which begins later today.

Chip Leader Continues to Run Hot

Blinds 1,000/2,000

After action folded to ''1833ratecut'' in the cutoff, they put out a bet of 5,300 which was faced by an all in jam from Brett "herrrooooo" Reiss of 39,500 chips. Action folded back to ''1833ratecut'' who surprisingly decided on a call with just {q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} when his cards were flipped. It was in bad shape against the {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts} of Reiss.

However, the board ran out {q-Hearts}{4-Spades}{2-Clubs}{a-Spades}{4-Hearts} to give ''1833ratecut'' a full house and busting Reiss.

CarlitosA Doubles Up

''CarlitosA''
''CarlitosA''

Blinds: 600/1200

After ''PopKornn" three-bet to 6,792 chips versus an open from Jonas "sober_swede" Hagstrom of 2,676 chips, "CarlitosA" then moved all in from the hijack for 39,000. Hagstrom got out of the way and ''PopKornn'' made the call but was in bad shape with {10-Clubs}{10-Spades} against the {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds} of ''CarlitosA''.

The board ran out {k-Hearts}{3-Spades}{3-Clubs}{8-Spades}{7-Clubs} to confirm the double and leave ''PopKornn'' on the short side of things.
