Jonathan Ounjian Bags Big on Day 1d of Event #3: $1,000 Mystery Millions

Level 22 : Blinds 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Jonathan Ounjian
Jonathan Ounjian

After a grueling 22 levels of play on Day 1d of Event #3: $1,000 Mystery Millions at the 2023 World Series Of Poker at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, 477 players were able to find a bag from a huge starting field of 8,061.

They will join the 528 survivors from the three other starting flights for a total of 1,005 players on Day 2. Day 2 marks the beginning of the mystery bounty element of the tournament.

Given that this was the final starting flight, it was always expected to draw the most runners. Even so, the fact that the overall field hit 18,188 entrants was an impressive feat. The numbers are so impressive that the tournament directors are considering adding an extra $1,000,000 top bounty as a result.

Jonathan Ounjian put himself in a prime position to chase those big bounties by spinning his stack up to an incredible 2,040,000. That was not the biggest stack, however, with Ronan Nally able to find himself with a gargantuan 2,820,000 at the end of the night, more than any other player was able to amass in the three previous starting flights.

Other big stacks include Calvin Anderson (2,390,000) Zack Wilson (2,350,000), Ramaswamy Pylooke (2,055,000), Stanley Lee (2,280,000),

Day 1d Action

As with the other Day 1s, the money bubble burst late in the evening. 1,210 players have now locked up a min-cash of $1,061 for their efforts. However, that pales in comparison to the prizes yet to be distributed.

Many notables hopped into the fray, with several able to navigate their way through to Day 2. They include Punnat Punsri (1,065,000), Garry Gates (735,000) and Jake Daniels (610,000).

Other well-known players were less fortunate, hitting the rail prior to the conclusion of the final level. Felipe Ramos, Chance Kornuth, and Alex Foxen will all have to watch from the sidelines as life-changing sums of money are snatched up by their better faring competitors.

Day 2 resumes on Sunday, June 4 at 10 a.m. at which point play will continue for either 17 levels or until just five players remain, whichever comes first. Blinds will resume at Level 23 with blinds of 20,000/40,000 and a 40,000 big blind ante. They will also increase to 40 minutes in length for the remainder of the tournament. With the mystery bounties in play at that time, the excitement is sure to ramp up considerably.

Though there is no guarantee that a $1,000,000 bounty will be claimed on Day 2, it is overwhelmingly likely that that will be the case. So be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews as its live reporting team continues to provide updates of this and every other bracelet event at the 2023 WSOP at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.

Gold gets his Wish Granted

Level 15 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Jamie Gold
Jamie Gold

Earlier today a new player sat down next to Jamie Gold. There was a minimum raise and six players went to the flop including Gold in the big blind and the new player in the small blind.

The flop came Jx10x3x and it was checked to Gold who bet 4,000 into a 5,000 pot. Everyone folded to the new player in the small blind who looked at Gold and said "What do you want me to do? I'll do anything you want".

Gold looked at him and said, "ok so go all in".

The small blind quickly shoved his brand new 40,000 stack into the middle and requested that he be able to film it for his blog to which Gold agreed.

Small Blind Player: KxQx
Jamie Gold: J?10?

The turn and river were blanks and Gold doubled his stack.

Mattioda Loses Cards, Wins Pot

Level 14 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Paul Mattioda
Paul Mattioda

PokerNews was told of a very interesting hand from a little earlier in the day by Paul Mattioda.

As told by Mattioda, action opened with the player under the gun raising to 5,500. A player in middle position called. Mattioda, in the hijack, then went all in for 6,500. Both players called.

As the 9x5x2x flop was being dealt, the player in middle position wished Mattioda luck. "Thanks," he said, "it's been a long day."

Mattioda then looked down to see that he had no cards in front of him, and that his cards appeared to have been placed on top of the muck. Tournament staff was called over, and it was determined that the dealer had accidentally mucked Mattioda's cards. After a lengthy discussion and video review, a tournament official pulled Mattioda aside and asked if he could name his exact two cards.

"Ace of hearts, ace of clubs," said Mattioda. The staff retrieved the top two cards from the muck (out of view of other players still in the hand) and returned them to Mattioda. With action restarted, the player under the gun bet 10,000, and the player in middle position folded.

Paul Mattioda: A?A?
Opponent: 10?10?

The turn and river ran clean, and Mattioda tripled up.

Level 3 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante
Jugal Daterao
Jugal Daterao

Jugal Daterao, in middle position, was facing a bet of 2,300 from his opponent in the small blind on a board of 9?6?7?3?. He raised to 6,100, and his opponent called.

A 6? arrived on the river, and Daterao's opponent checked. Daterao then threw in three red chips for a bet of 15,000. His opponent looked at his cards and, after a few moments, threw in the call. Daterao turned over 3?3? for a full house.

His opponent laughed and mucked. "Nice one," he said.
