Global Poker Index: Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier Maintains Lead During WSOP

With the World Series of Poker in full swing, one deep run for a player in the top 10 or even just outside of it can really shake things up. So far, Vanessa Selbst is making the biggest moves. She's back in the top 10 after a fourth-place showing in Event #2. Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier is still No. 1 and no doubt he'll be looking to further his lead with a productive WSOP, but right on his heels is Jason Mercier. Neither has posted a big WSOP result yet, but it's only a matter of time.
Welcome to the GPI
Three of the top four finishers in WSOP Event #6, the $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Mixed-Max, are new to this week's GPI. Joseph Cheong finished runner-up but is back on the GPI in the No. 121 spot. Hugo Lemaire finished fourth and holds down the fort in the No. 160 spot, while champion Aubin Cazals debuts in the No. 242 spot.

Ups and Downs
The biggest rise of the week belonged to Jacob Bazeley. He finished runner-up in WSOP Event #2, a $1,500 no-limit hold'em. The man who took it down: Brent Hanks, vaulted 92 places to No. 207.

Andras Kovacs slid the most this week. His only two Period 1 scores aged into Period 2. Jake Cody also slipped. His win in the $25,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em event at the 2011 WSOP aged into Period 3.

What's In Store?
Vanessa Selbst rejoined the top 10 this week and her deep run in Event #12 will push her toward the top five. The effects from the 2012 World Series of Poker have only just begun. To this point, only six events have had an impact on the GPI and next week, 12 more events will tip the GPI scales.
