Global Poker Index: Shannon Shorr and Paul Volpe Rejoin Top 10

Each week, the Global Poker Index releases a list of the top 300 tournament poker players in the world using a formula that takes into account a player's results over six half-year periods. The GPI also ranks the top performers of the year over two six-month periods as calculated by the USA Today Global Poker Index point system.

2014 GPI Player of the Year

Canadian Mike McDonald remains the leader in the 2014 GPI Player of the Year race with nearly 500 points. The man known as ��Timex�� has three seven-figure scores in the first six weeks of the year.

The bottom six players in the top 10 all moved up one spot in the POY race, including Italian Mustapha Kanit. Kanit joins the top 10 this week after winning two side events at the Aussie Millions and reaching the final table of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $25,000 High Roller.

GPI 300 Top 10

Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu is still the No. 1 ranked player in the world, and he is joined by two new players in the top 10: Shannon Shorr and Paul Volpe.

Shorr, one of the GPI��s top players of the decade, finished runner-up to James Calderaro in the WPT Lucky Hearts Poker Open, earning $190,039. The American has earned more than a half of a million dollars per year on the live circuit since 2011.

Volpe is the beneficiary of decaying scores from both Ravi Raghavan and Erik Seidel. We are now more than three years removed from Seidel��s insane 2011 Aussie Millions where he won the $250,000 Challenge and finished third in the $100,000 Challenge, and Raghavan made a deep run in the 2011 PCA $25,000 High Roller.

Welcome to the GPI

With a runner-up finish in PokerNews Mid-States Poker Tour Running Aces Harness Park, Blake Bohn returns to the GPI 300. Bohn earned $49,741 for his deep run, bringing his career live earnings to over $1.3 million, and comes in this week at No. 243.

Notables Jim Collopy, Erick Lindgren, and Tony Cousineau also return to the GPI 300. Collopy reached a final table at a side event at the Aussie Millions, while Cousineau finished 15th at WPT Lucky Hearts.

Biggest Gains

Two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Athanasios Polychronopoulos makes the biggest leap this week, climbing 77 spots to No. 185. The Greek grinder previously reached a final table in a side event at the PCA, and finished 28th in the WPT Lucky Hearts.

Corrie Wunstel and Mukul Pahuja also climb the ranks thanks to deep runs in the Sunshine State. Wunstel cashed in both WPT Lucky Hearts and the World Series of Poker Circuit Palm Beach Kennel Club Main Event, while Pahuja bubbled the unofficial final table for the WSOP-C PBKC Main Event.

Biggest Drops

German Manig Loeser takes the biggest hit this week, plummeting 85 places to No. 254. We are now three full years removed away from his two final tables at EPT Deauville, and in a month��s time his six-figure score in the 2011 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour Main Event will also be removed from his GPI score entirely.
