Matas Cimbolas: 2015 Sky Poker UKPC High Roller champion

When the inaugural Sky Poker UK Poker Championships (UKPC) ran at Dusk Till Dawn in 2014, they instantly became a must-play event for British and Irish grinders. Earlier this week, the 2015 edition of the UKPC kicked off and already it is looking like another amazing festival.

Sean Rigley was the first beneficiary at the UKPC, outlasting a monster-sized field of 2,357 entries in the 100 buy-in UKPC Mini. Rigley, a Yorkshireman, emerged victorious after defeating Lauren Render heads-up to scoop 36,000.

Since Rigley's victory, Matas Cimbolas helped himself to the title of 2015 Sky Poker UK Poker Championships High Roller champion and the popular Sin Melin topped the Day 1c chip counts.

Day 1d takes place on Friday, Feb. 27 with the Main Event scheduled to crown its winner on Sunday, March 1. Be sure to check out the daily recaps on UK & Ireland PokerNews.

Other stories that were popular on our UK site this week include Colm Hanlon walking away with the title of 888poker Live Local Series Dublin champion. 888poker has entered the live tournament market with a series featuring affordable 200 buy-ins and so far they look to set to become a major player in the live tournament world.

We have to doff our cap to Jonathan Gill who helped himself to almost $75,000 this Sunday when he finished fourth in the PokerStars Sunday Million. Gill has been putting a ton of work into his game over the past few years and former world number one Patrick Leonard claims that Gill is the most underrated grinder online at the moment, which is quite an accolade we're sure you'll agree.

Talking of rankings, the current UKIPT Dublin champion and European Poker Tour London Main Event finalist Kevin Killeen climbed to the top of the Irish online poker rankings this week following his runner-up finish in the Full Tilt Tyrannosurus Rex tournament and winning the PokerStars.fr High Roller. There are only a few points separating the top three Irish players at the moment so it will be interesting t see how long Killeen is king for.

Lastly, a big round of applause to Victoria Coren-Mitchell who managed to bag not one, not two, but three titles at the 2014 British Poker Awards. The former Team PokerStars Pro collected gongs for the Best Poker Personality of the Year, Best Social Media User and her win at EPT Sanremo netted her the Best Performance of the Year.

Check out all of the winners, here.
