2024 WSOP Day 39: Negreanu and Hellmuth Make Day 2 of Main Event

The 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas in on its 39th Day and the Main Event is really rolling now.

Day 1c of the Main Event played out today, with Phil Hellmuth joining (and dressed for) the fight. Hellmuth entered to Carl Douglas's "Kung Fu Fighting" with a black belt and keikogi thrown over his usual poker-brat apparel. He also managed to bag up 66,700 in chips at the end of the day, slightly above the starting stack.

The event saw a big spike in turnout with around 2,500 more players buying in, more than Day 1a and 1b combined.

Meanwhile, Event #80: $800 Independence Day Celebration crowned a winner (perhaps it is more appropriate to say "elected" a winner?).

The event launched on July 4 (Independence Day in the U.S. but also in the Philippines), continued on July 5 (Algeria, Cape Verde, and Venezuela), and finished on July 6 (Comoros and Malawi) with Francis Anderson �� fittingly, an American player �� winning the bracelet. Anderson beat Brent Lee heads up to take home $501,040 along with the jewelry.

Big Turnout, Big Names at Day 1c of the 2024 $10,000 Main Event

The big turnout today (approximately 2,500 players) at the Event #81: $10,000 WSOP Main Event World Championship brings the total number of entrants to around 4,250 players.

This still puts the field a long way off from last year's record-breaking turnout of 10,043 players and about 20% lower than this same point last year.

However, with one more Day 1 flight and late registration running for two additional levels on both Day 2s, there is still room for a final rush to get the event over the limit.

Among the survivors, Daniel Negreanu got through to Day 2 with a reasonable stack of 37,900 left in his stack.

Some other players who got through, who will also have some catching up to do on Day 2 were Todd Brunson (48,900), 2024 Ladies Event champion Shiina Okamoto (44,000), and Calvin Anderson (41,700).

At the top of the chip stacks is Robert Pardo with 441,000 in chips. This makes him the overall chip leader, taking over from George Dolofan (314,000) who led the field after Day 1b.

Among those who did turn out on Day 1c, big names were plentiful.

Other players who bagged an above starting stack included Arthur Morris (221,800), Justin Bonomo (174,100), Arden Cho (168,800), Chris Brewer (156,800), Adrian Mateos (143,100), Adam Hendrix (134,900), Ben Lamb (124,600), Isaac Haxton (124,900), Mike Matusow (121,500), and Maria Ho (79,600).

Today was also a great day for previous Main Event champs. As well as Hellmuth �� the 1989 Main Event champion �� seven other previous champs found a bag.

2002 Main Event champion Robert Varkonyi (58,000), 2003 Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker (64,300), 2005 Main Event champion Joe Hachem (72,000), 2006 Main Event champion Jamie Gold (111,100), 2017 Main Event champion Scott Blumstein (53,800), 2020 Main Event champion Damian Salas (50,800), and three-time ME champion Johnny Chan (45,000) all also made it to Day 2.

Not everyone did make it though. Only around 2,094 of today's entrants survived to see Day 2.

David Moses busted the first hand of the day, the fourth player to do so this series. Dan Bilzerian did only slightly better lasting just two hands and failing to get a bluff through both times.

For those who did make it through, Day 1a, 1b, and 1c will combine on July 7 for Day 2abc. Before that, Day 1d shuffles up and deals at 12 p.m. local time on July 6. The day will last for five levels of two hours each. Then the remaining Day 1d players will then progress to Day 2d on July 8.

What to Expect on Day 40 of the 2024 WSOP?

Day 40 of the WSOP falls on July 6 and will be all about Day 1d of the 2024 $10,000 WSOP Main Event. This will be the last of the event's Day 1 flights and it kicks off at 12 p.m. local time.

Day 1d of the Main event is always the busiest of the four Day 1 flights. So expect high turnout and a ton of action all of which you can follow here on PokerNews.

While the Main Event will be dominating the Horseshoe and Paris, Event #82: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em will be kicking off.

This two-day event is brand new this year, so whoever wins will be earning the first bracelet of its kind.
